October 23rd, 2022

Dear Intermediate School Families,

Please be reminded that there is no school for students on Tuesday, November 1st, as the FLRSD staff will be engaging in professional development.

 Bus Evacuation Drill:

Per Mr. Rezendes, we will be conducting our rear door bus evacuation drill at the school in the morning on Thursday, October 27th.  This will be weather permitting. Please be sure to have students dress appropriately, as they will be instructed to sit and slide out the rear door of the school bus.

Activities in the Gymnasium:

We have wrapped up fitness testing and got a new push-up record by Nicholas V, who repped out 72 push-ups!  Next up, we will be transitioning into some Turkey Trot prep work for the fourth graders, learning the race route and working on running fitness.  The Turkey Trot will be on November 23rd.  Fifth grade will be doing a little running before we are in the pool for our first swim session, starting on Tuesday, November 1st.  More information about swimming will be sent home soon.  Overall, we are off to a great start, routines are learned, expectations are being met, and we are getting our heart rates up.

Don't forget that the Nature’s Classroom information meeting is October 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Some Words from the Library:

Library classes recently completed mini research projects on Dia de los Muertos to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, as well as on bridges to celebrate STEM week.  We will soon begin learning about digital citizenship.  Topics will include protecting our privacy and cyberbullying.

A Note from the Music Room:

Fourth graders have been working on keeping a steady beat in our drum circles with a game called Orbit. Multiple rhythms are sent into orbit in our circles and students have to focus in on the rhythm as they play one at a time without speeding up our base tempo. Students have also been introduced to boomwhackers and worked together as one big collaborative instrument to complete songs like "In The Hall of The Mountain King" and "Ghostbusters".

In fifth grade music classes this week, students performed the "Dance of Death". Students were asked to create a movement that corresponds to the different musical themes in Camille Saint-Saens’ "Danse Macabre" and perform the movement when they recognize that specific motif.

A Picture of Art Class Happenings:

Fourth and fifth graders are finishing up their Square 1 Art. This is a fundraiser we do every year where keepsakes of students' art can be purchased. Catalogs with all order information will be sent home in a couple of weeks.

Students are also creating hand-drawn cards for the  local veterans of Freetown and Lakeville in preparation for Veteran’s Day.

A Message from the Nurse’s Suite:

This time of the year brings beautiful foliage and cooler weather. Please have children dress in layers, as outdoor recess can become chilly.

If your child has a physical examination by their doctor, please send a copy to the health office. The state of Massachusetts requires compliance with immunizations and physical examinations for students, and the school health office is required to keep updated records on all students.

Health screenings will begin after Thanksgiving break and will be going through the end of the school year. Each child is screened once, with a second screening occurring several weeks later only for those children who did not pass the initial screen. Mrs. Burke will only notify parents of children who have not passed a second screen, so if you do not hear from her, that means your child has passed the screening. Further information will be provided to parents whose children require additional screening by a physician.

Healthy tips for this time of year are to wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and stay active!  Please check your child's candy when trick-or-treating, and remember that tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood conditions in the US.

 Lockdown Drill:

The students and staff successfully completed our second safety drill–a lockdown drill–on Wednesday.  Everyone followed all the procedures that our school resource officer, Officer Bartholomew, reviewed with the students in September at our school safety assembly.  The boys and girls were respectful, responsible, and safe!
