The

Social is BAAAAACK!

Campus Programs:

Please see the new handball flyer on the Campus Programs page:

Grade Four ELA:

Students have reviewed the five elements of a story - characters, setting, plot, conflict, and theme. We have  used fictional stories from Storyworks as mini-reads to model identifying these elements as we get ready to begin our first extended text of the year, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. We will move onto figurative language and how writers bring their writing to life!

Grade Four Math:

In fourth grade math students have been exploring comparing multi-digit numbers, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, and they are continuing to practice rounding multi-digit numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands.

Grade Five ELA:

Students are continuing their work with plot elements.  Specifically, the focus has shifted to the theme of a story and how its universal message makes it applicable to all people, in all places, at all times.  They've also been brushing up on their inferencing skills by combining their background knowledge with text evidence to "read between the lines" of various pieces of text.

Grade Five Math:

In fifth grade math, we have begun studying place value, with a particular emphasis on decimal numbers. In our base-ten system, each place value place to the left is 10 times greater and each place to the right is 1/10 as much. Students will be learning to read and write decimal numbers in standard (number) form, word form, and expanded form. Help your child to look for and discuss decimal numbers that you see in your daily life, like money and weights or volumes on packages.

 Hydration Stations:

We are so fortunate to have three hydration stations in our building, which are available to the students and staff.  If your student doesn't already have a reusable water bottle, we encourage you to acquire one, so that we can keep everyone hydrated and healthy!

 Mrs. Pereira’s Classroom:

Mrs. P. and the staff in C37 started the school year setting routines and expectations for the students to ensure behavioral and academic success.  This week the students focused on social skills questions.  Students use a variety of ways to communicate: verbalization; eye contact; and Proloquo-to-Go, which is a speaking application on their iPads.  Students have also been working on identifying emotions.  In science this week we started the solar system!  Students have enjoyed listening to related songs,  did cut-and-paste activities,  and a planet ordering game.

 Mrs. Urban's Class:

In Mrs. Urban's classroom, students are using two read-alouds to discuss story elements. Fifth graders are using Wishtree, and fourth graders are using Chocolate Fever. Students are working with sentence types and will soon begin working with nouns. In math, students are exploring place value of whole numbers, comparing and ordering.  They are also working on multiplication and subtraction facts. Fourth grade science classes are exploring internal and external structures. They just worked in the science lab for the first time!  In social studies, they have been working with identifying oceans and continents and recently took a quiz.  They have moved onto using maps and globes and identifying their differences. In their social studies classes, fifth graders are learning about Jamestown and Plymouth Colonies, and in science class, they are learning all about the properties of matter.
