Dear Intermediate School Families,
We are happy to have many new and interesting books that can always be enjoyed, but are highlighted this month. These include Who Was the Greatest?: Muhammad Ali, Who Was Kobe Bryant?, Lion Lights: My Invention that Made Peace with Lions, Race Against Time: the Untold Story of Scipio Jones and the Battle to Save Twelve Innocent Men, Saving American Beach: the Biography of African American Environmentalist MaVynee Betsch, and Buzzing with Questions: the Inquisitive Mind of Charles Henry Turner.
Winter Math iReady Diagnostic:
We are so proud of our students' hard work on the winter iReady diagnostic! The median progress to annual typical growth in math is already 67%, even though we're only halfway through the school year. Fifty percent of fourth grader students and fifty-five percent of fifth grade students have improved their overall grade-level placement! We've made the most growth in the domain of number and operations, a big focus of the fourth and fifth grade math curricula.
As we continue through the school year, our focus will shift from whole numbers and decimals to fractions. We will also spend more time in the domains of measurement and geometry. You can work with your child at home practicing math facts and looking for opportunities to talk about math in everyday life. For example, we often see fractions when we're measuring something with a ruler or measuring ingredients for a recipe. We can see different types of angles and parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines on buildings and roads.
Winter Reading iReady Diagnostic:
The fourth and fifth graders completed their winter iReady diagnostic testing, and their teachers met last week to discuss the data. We are all very impressed with the hard work our students have shown since the fall testing! In reading, we’ve had over 40% of our students already meet the growth they were expected to reach by June!
The National Wear Red Day®
It was a sea of red here at GRAIS on Friday as we supported the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women® movement, which encourages awareness about cardiovascular disease!
