Dear Intermediate School Families,

We are so grateful for all the donations of NEW hats, socks, and mittens!  The drive does not end until this coming Friday, if you still wish to donate.  Donations will go to Our Sister’s Place and Conway House again this year.

GRAIS Choral Performance:

Congratulations to the 102 talented singers in grades four and five who performed last Tuesday evening for a joyful audience at the high school.  Many thanks to Mr. Duff for his hard work with the students over several weeks in preparation for the evening.  Thank you to all the teachers who volunteered to help keep things organized too!

Grade Four ELA and Social Studies:

Students are continuing to practice reading comprehension strategies while incorporating holiday celebrations.  Did you know that there are around 14 holidays celebrated during the month of December?  In social studies, we are wrapping up our unit in the Northeast.

Grade Four Math and Science:

Students will be finishing up unit two on multiples, factors, and solving one-two step word problems.  They will be starting unit three on multiplying and dividing whole numbers. They continue their study of rock patterns and changing land with a focus on weathering and erosion in science.

Grade Five ELA and Social Studies:

Students are wrapping up their novel study on The Tale of Despereaux.  Students will be assessed on the novel and their understanding of symbolism. Be on the lookout for our fifth grade reading challenge.  That information will be coming home on January 2nd.   In social studies,  students are continuing to learn about the causes of the American Revolution.  Did you know that John Adams was the defense attorney for Captain Thomas Preston and his soldiers who were put on trial for their part in the Boston Massacre?  He believed that "Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."

Grade Five Math and Science:

Students are finishing up their study of whole number and decimal operations.  They have learned to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers with and without decimals. Students will take the unit test before vacation.  In science, we are beginning our study of space. Students are learning how gravity pulls objects toward the center of Earth. Have conversations with your child about what you notice about shadows, the sun, and the moon.
