Dear Intermediate School Families,

Below is some news on what has been happening and what’s coming up!

Nature Classroom:

All families who wish to have their fourth grader attend the trip in June, MUST complete this Google form to register the child.  You must also indicate if you would like your name to be entered in the chaperone lottery.  The cost will be approximately $525, with a $140 deposit due by no later than December 20th.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Stacey Snyder, the coordinator of the trip at ssnyder@freelake.org.

Grade Four Math and Science:

In math, students  will be exploring patterns, multiples, factors, as well as prime and composite numbers. They will also be solving for the unknown in both multiplication and division problems, and using bar models to represent multiplication and division equations. In science we are excited to delve into our Earth science unit where we will discover that studying landforms and rock layers can help us to understand erosion, deposition, and the changes to the Earth's landscape over time.

Grade Four ELA and Social Studies:

The fourth graders are working on writing paragraphs using topic sentences, detail sentences and clinchers. We are also working on capitalization and punctuation. We are also making inferences when we read, as it is important to use the text and our background knowledge. We will be continuing to expand our vocabulary using Flocabulary. They will be learning all about the Northeast Region in the coming weeks.  We will be using our map skills to learn about the states, capitals, landforms and bodies of water. The natural resources, climate and the economy are some of the important topics that we will cover about our region.

Grade Five Math and Science:

In math, we will continue working on our unit on four operations with whole numbers and decimals. Upon return from Thanksgiving break, we will continue with the standard algorithm for multiplication with whole numbers and decimals.  In science, we will be continuing our unit on mixtures. Students will be learning to differentiate between a physical and chemical change and learn the rules to identify if a chemical change has occurred. Students will be learning that chemical changes cannot be undone.

Grade Five ELA and Social Studies

Students have begun a novel study on The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamilo.  During this novel, they will be learning about theme and how the author uses light and dark to symbolize good and evil.  In social studies, students are wrapping up their unit on the original 13 colonies where they've been learning about first representative governments in America as well as how climate and geography played a part in each colony's economy.
