Dear GRAIS Families,

As we begin to prepare for our annual field day—Survivor Day—we hope you will consider donating a case of small bottles of water for our students who will be giving it their all in lots of fun races and contests representing their homerooms on this day of healthy competition, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.  Donations may be dropped off in the vestibule any school day between now and the big event on the 16th.  We also ask that you have the tee-shirt your child was given for the fun run ready to wear on the 16th.  Survivor Day is now in its 14th year, and it’s always a highlight of the intermediate school experience.

Art Classes:

Fifth graders are creating color wheels. They're using the primary color paints to create secondary and tertiary colors of the color wheel.  Fourth graders are using a paper plate loom to create circular yarn weavings.Students' artwork from the year will be getting brought home in the coming weeks

Library Classes: All students who have returned all of their library books by June 12th will be entered in a raffle to win a poster donated by the PTO, and there will be 10 winners! Fourth and fifth grade classes are both practicing research skills.  Fifth grade classes are using the internet to research Civil Rights leaders and fourth grade classes are using multiple resources to learn about explorers.

Music Classes:

GRAIS students have been finishing up learning about their  musicians of the month, the members of  Led Zeppelin!  Fourth grade students have been creating memes to classical music and will be starting their DJ project next week. Fifth grade students have been working on their projects where they will get to be the teacher in my class for a few minutes and teach me about the current artists that they enjoy. We can't wait to learn about all the exciting artists!

Physical Education and HealthClasses:

We wrapped up our end of year fitness testing and had some excellent results.  The class averages were up 10% over the beginning of the year which is a combination of fitness increase and test familiarity.  We had some blistering fast times on the 1/2 mile run and push-up scores of 70+ push-ups in a row.  We are finishing off the year with some games.  An email went home about the fifth grade growth and development assembly happening on June 5th.  I you have any questions please contact Mr. Ireland at rireland@freelake.org.
