News and Happenings around the classrooms:

Preschool:  This week in preschool, we enjoyed celebrating Halloween!  On Monday, the preschoolers wore their costumes and played various Halloween games in our classroom stations.  On Wednesday, we watched staff members as they were “color dusted” by students in classes that raised the most during our Fun Run Fundraiser.  Preschoolers also showed off their smiles during our annual picture day!

Kindergarten:  What a week in kindergarten! We started our week with Halloween festivities. In our costumes we completed a variety of fun Halloween themed centers. We also spent some time outside to participate in our Fun Run Color Dusting reward. Our Fundations letters were d and s, our high frequency word was “see”. In math, we counted 8 and 9 and in science we finished up our pumpkin unit.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we worked on  unit 3 week 2  in FUNdations. We worked on digraphs th, sh, wh, ch, and ck. For comprehension we reviewed retelling stories and asking and answering questions in a text along with visualization. In writing we are working on responding to a text. In math we worked on number partners for 6 and 7.  In science we opened up pumpkins and had a great time digging out the seeds and pulp.

Grade 2:  This week in second grade we worked on determining story elements in fantasy stories. In Fundations we learned about multisyllabic words. In Math we worked with strategies to help us solve 1-step word problems using addition and subtraction. Children have been encouraged to share a variety of strategies in order to solve the same number story or word problem. In writing we worked on developing our Realistic Fiction writing.

Grade 3:   We had a very exciting week in third grade with Halloween fun, pumpkin seed math and Fun Run incentives. In reading we read a realistic fiction story called Yoon and the  Jade Bracelet.  In writing we began writing the openings to our personal narratives. In social studies we read about how Wampanoags lived in  the summer and spring seasons. In math, we made a multiplication flip book showing all the multiplication strategies we have learned.

Art: Kindergarteners listened to When a Line Bends, a Shape Begins.  We discussed how a shape is different from a line and they drew original drawings while using shapes to represent objects.  Grade 1 finished a few projects including painting their Joan Miro inspired drawings.  Grade 2 is learning about the Mexican Folk tin art.  They are creating a paper Mexican mirror.  Grade 3 is learning about positive and negative space and art and creating complex cut paper positive/negative shape designs.

Physical Education: This week we started the sport where children are champions: Cup Stacking.  Students in kindergarten and first grade learned how to walk the cups, and complete the 333 stack. Second and third graders walked the cups, stacked the 333, shuffled the cups, and tried the 66 stack. If there was time at the end of class, students had free-stack time.

Keep a look out for an email with more information about our K-3rd grade family Cup Stacking night which will be held on Thursday, November 17th

Music:  This week, students K-3 have started the 1st week of their unit on improvising. Grade 3 will begin improvising movements in Mama Lama, Grade 2 will explore improvising using mallet instruments. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will improvise with arioso type songs.

Library:  During library class this week, kindergarten and first grade students explored databases including the Britannica Fundamentals database and the Gale for Elementary database.  Second and third grade students learned how to use the Blockly app for the iPad and learned how to write a code using the Blockly language for the Dash and Dot robots.
