News and Happenings around the classrooms:

Preschool:  This week in preschool we began learning about our next Lively Letter, letter f, our “quiet lip biting sound.”  We began learning the proper formation of the letter F through sensory activities, such as writing this letter in sand using a feather.  As part of our study of the letter F, we discussed a variety of feelings. We carved pumpkins and the preschoolers made predictions about what would be inside.   On Thursday, preschoolers were invited to bring in something for our triangle show and tell.

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our Fundations letters were a and g, with g being our first “worm line letter.” Our high frequency word this week is “we.” Math focused on using two smaller groups to make a group of 6 or 7. In writing, we practiced how our illustrations and words go together and in science we worked with our pumpkin unit.

Grade 1:  This week in first grade we started unit 3 in FUNdations. We worked on digraphs th, sh, wh, ch, and ck. For comprehension we reviewed retelling stories and asking and answering questions in a text. In writing we are working on responding to a text. In math we worked on learning doubles facts and using those facts to solve word problems. In science we are learning about pumpkins.

Grade 2:  This week in second grade we continued to learn about story elements. In Fundations we continued to work with suffixes and learned about the different sounds that the suffix “ed” can make. In math we worked to understand what makes odd or even numbers. In writing we worked on realistic fiction writing and learned about the parts of speech nouns and verbs and what makes a complete sentence. Finally, in Social Studies we learned about different types of  landforms.

Grade 3:   This week in third grade we had a new essential question: What can traditions teach you about cultures? We read some realistic fiction related to this question. In writing we chose a topic to narrow down for our personal narratives. In math we learned about related facts in multiplication and division. Finally, in Science we had  lots of fun exploring objects in motion with our hands on science stations.

Music: This week, students K-3 have started the 6th week of their unit on being expressive in music. We will learn new songs, games, and movements to be performed with appropriate musicality. Grades K and 1 will continue moving expressively with an emphasis on keeping a steady beat. We will continue to assess students on their singing voices. Grade 2 will have their second opportunity to try boomwhackers. Grade 3 will practice singing in a round style with increasing complexity.

Art:  All grades are now in our shape unit.   Click here to learn more about shape as an element of art with your child Shape Unit.  Kindergarteners are learning to name and draw geometric shapes in their art.  Grade 1 Finished their Joan Miro inspired art with oil pastels and blue watercolor.  Grade 2 learned about Aboriginal dot paintings and created their own.  Grade 3 finished up all of their line projects.

Physical Education: This week all grades played the game “Skeleton Run” by working as a group to earn pieces of a skeleton, and then putting the skeleton together. Each grade also had a small health lesson. Third graders learned the functions of the skeletal system, what the skeleton is made of, and how it works. Second graders learned the importance of eating and drinking the right types of calcium rich foods to help strengthen their bones. Kindergarten and First Graders learned about emotions and specifically learned about what happens to their body when they are frightened. They also learned what they can do if being scared is a feeling that they do not like.

**Save the Date** Thursday November 17th, the return of CupStacking Night!

Library:  During library class this week, kindergarten students learned about the Britannica Fundamental website. They learned how to navigate through an Ebook and used the create tool to respond to what they read about in the book.  First grade students learned more about the Gale Database for Elementary School. Students chose an article to read about health and responded on Seesaw about what they learned. Second and third grade students played a coding game for Osmo on the iPad called Coding with Awbie.
