News and Happenings from around the classrooms - Week of October 14 - October 18:

Pre-School:  This week in preschool we reviewed the letters p, b, t, and d.  We learned about the season of Fall.  Learning experiences included a nature walk and a pretend ride to a pumpkin patch.  We highlighted the color orange on Thursday, and wore something orange to school!  Activities included color blending to create orange jack-o-lanterns, painting with orange paint, and playing with orange play dough.

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our Wonders work was -our HFW word was “we”. We worked on Aa for letter name, sound and formation. We focused on the print concepts of tracking left/right and top/bottom and parts of a book. We discussed characters in a story, along with asking and answering questions. For PA we identified rhymes and identified individual sounds in isolation and blending sounds together. In writing we worked on left/right progression and details. Our math lesson was to count, show and write numbers to 5.

Grade 1:  This week in first grade we learned about bonus letters and consonant L-Blends. We reviewed digraphs th, sh, wh, ch, and ck. For comprehension we reviewed retelling stories and asking and answering questions in a text. In writing we are working on writing sentences with a complete thought, capital letter and end mark. In math we learned about solving word problems to tens. In science we are learning about pumpkins.

Grade 2: Second graders learned how to read and make bar and picture graphs in math. In phonics, we continued to practice reading and spelling words with magic e and learned about possessive nouns. We are also working on asking and answering questions when reading a story. In writing we are continuing to write our “how-to” procedural texts. In social studies we are distinguishing between needs and wants.

Grade 3:  This week, third grade students learned the meaning of division in word problems, equations, and pictures.  They also developed an understanding of the connection between division and multiplication.   In reading, we continued to explore the essential question: what can traditions teach you about cultures? We read great stories to develop an understanding, engage in conversations, and complete text responses about this question.  In writing, students completed their first drafts of their personal narrative.

Art:   Kindergarteners drew varied lines with sharpie and then traced them with crayola markers.  We sprayed the paper with water to watch the crayola markers turn into paint.  Grade 1 students are learning about geometric shapes and drawing adorable houses.  We even tried to make them look 3D.  Grade 2 completed their paper ancient Greek vase project by adding greek line patterns.  Grade 3 learned about portraits and self portraits.  We looked at many self portraits by famous artists.  Finally, we started our own self portrait inspired by Frida Kahlo’s The Frame.

Physical Education:  Students are finishing their official Throwing and Catching unit, but will continue to use these skills throughout the year as they learn and play other games. Second and third grade students practiced their overhand throws, tossed and caught using scoops and lacrosse sticks, and caught footballs on the run like wide receivers. First grade and Kindergarteners practiced their underhand throws and catches in a variety of stations including: Bounce and Catch, Stomp and Catch, ice cream cone catch, throwing at targets, and kicking the soccer ball.

Grades K and 1 will continue moving expressively with an emphasis on keeping a steady beat. Grade 2 will have their first opportunity to try boomwhackers. Grade 3 will practice singing in a round style.

Library:  October 14–18 is Digital Citizenship Week! Digital Citizenship week focuses on helping students navigate the Internet in safe, productive, and healthy ways.
