Mr. Ward’s Message:

As we inch toward the finish line for the 2024 school year Freetown Elementary School would like to pause and say THANK YOU to the Freetown PTO for their continued support and devotion to our students, staff, families, and community. Time and time again, the FES PTO will be ready to assist in a moment’s notice to support our school community. The examples are endless from field trips, family nights, community events on the weekend, ice cream socials, in-school assemblies, spirited days for staff, the purchase of many educational materials in and around the classroom and school, and the list goes on. Collectively, together, THANK YOU FES PTO for everything you do for us and Freetown Elementary School!

This week will bring the Annual Fox Festival! The Freetown Fox Festival will be held on Tuesday, June 11th. The weather right now looks promising. Please have your child dress appropriately in clothing and sneakers that are comfortable to move around in as students will be participating in games and an obstacle course bouncy house. If Tuesday does not work Wednesday (6/12), will be the rain date.

This week will bring the much anticipated Second Grade Star Spangled Spectacular in which second grade students will sing Patriotic songs, dress in red, white, and blue, honor the American Flag and share facts about the USA. Second grade families are invited to attend the Second Grade Star-Spangled Spectacular on Thursday, June 13th beginning at 4:00 PM. Around the Freetown Elementary School Classrooms for the Week of June 3-7:

Pre-School: This week in preschool we learned about Father’s Day, and the children created special gifts for their fathers. We also learned about the letter E, and the sound it makes. The children completed their end-of-year self portraits, as well as end-of-year assessments.

Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten we reviewed skills from our Unit 10 Wonders curriculum. In math, we are reviewing concepts such as making ten, number partners, teen numbers and general number sense. Our butterflies are starting to emerge and we continue to observe and write about their metamorphosis. We have also learned many interesting facts about their life cycle.

Grade 1: This week in first grade we focused on diphthongs oi and oy. For comprehension, we reviewed plot, character and setting along with the purpose of reading. In writing and science, we are continuing to work on our informative animal research books. For math this week, we finished up the time and measurement units. We are excited for the Fox Festival next week!

Grade 2: This week in second grade reading we will read nonfiction texts in order to describe connections between steps. In math we continued to work with shapes and learned about dividing them into halves, thirds and fourths. We reviewed spelling patterns and syllable types learned this year in phonics. We wrote fiction stories. We continued to learn about United States national symbols in preparation for our Second Grade Star Spangled Spectacular!

Grade 3: This week in third grade, we performed at our annual Wax Museum! Students have worked so hard! They chose a historical person, learned about how that person made a positive impact in society, created a poster to represent that person, wrote a speech to teach others, and presented it at the wax museum! All third grade teachers were so proud of how hard the students worked and all that they have accomplished! In addition, third graders continued to learn about Freetown. Students were fascinated learning about how different the libraries, churches, and schools were in history in comparison to how they operate today.

Physical Education: This week in PE all classes practiced the Fox Festival games to be prepared for next week’s event. Theu games include: Hula Hands, Team Cup Stacking, Hole-in-One mini golf, and Shower Cups relay.

Art: K, 1 and 2 Students reviewed symmetry as a design principle. While they drew original symmetrical art, pairs got to engage with the Promethean white board app and played a symmetry drawing game. Grade 3 students continued to practice the element of art, space, and also engaged with the Promethean board and masterpieces of art by identifying ways the artists showed distance in their paintings.

Music: This week, students K-3 have started the sixth and final week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Third grade will be reviewing their repertoire learned throughout the year.

Library: During library class this week, students in grades K and 1 learned about computer hardware. Students worked on Seesaw to match a description given about the piece of hardware to a picture of the hardware. Students made a drawing of one type of hardware and explained in a video on Seesaw the name of the hardware and the purpose of it. Students in 2nd and 3rd worked on Unit 4 of the Be Internet Awesome curriculum from Google. Students worked on an activity based on how we notice and identify emotions from people's facial expressions and body language. Students worked on answering questions about a scenario between two classmates and determining how they were feeling during the interaction and how they could tell.
