Mr. Ward’s Message:
With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies. With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher. Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts. For the month of May these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student. Congratulations to the May students that were nominated…

Around the Freetown Elementary School Classrooms for the Week of May 27-31:
Pre-School: This week in preschool, we released our butterflies. We attended a presentation by the Science Storytellers, which included experiments about pressure, chemical changes, and force. We also reviewed the letters learned thus far.
Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our HFW were- come, does. We revisited a variety of skills: Ask and answer questions, top/bottom and left/right tracking, return sweep. We alo continued with our phonemic awareness practice of phoneme and syllable manipulation/deletion. Classes focused on reviewing concepts in math. Our butterflies are progressing through their life cycle. Students have been eager and excited to observe and record their changes. Students and teachers are having fun moving through the alphabet each day to the end of the year with our ABC Countdown.
Grade 1: This week in first grade we focused on diphthongs ou and ow (sound in cloud and cow), along with comparative endings -er and -est. For comprehension, we reviewed character, setting and plot. In writing and science, we are continuing to work on our animal research unit. For math this week, we worked on telling time to the hour and half hour.
Grade 2: This week in second grade reading we will read nonfiction texts in order to describe connections between steps. In math we continued to work with shapes and learned about tiling in rectangles. We reviewed spelling patterns and syllable types learned this year in phonics. We wrote fiction stories. We began to learn about United States national symbols in preparation for our Second Grade Star Spangled Spectacular!
Grade 3: Third graders have had a very busy week! They visited GRAIS and had an opportunity to learn more about the transition from third to fourth grade, meet the amazing teachers, and get a tour of the school. In addition, third graders continued to learn all about the important historical landmarks in Freetown. Finally, third graders have continued working on their biography project for the wax museum coming up on June 6th for our school and families. What a busy, fun, and engaging week!
Physical Education: Most 2nd and 3rd grade classes worked on their volleyball striking skills. First Graders and Kindergarten students practiced hopping and jumping their way through hopscotch.
Art: We now have a Promethean Board in the art room! Students traced lines in shapes in a Wassily Kandinsky painting as our first lesson using the new technology. I hope to find many new and exciting ways to engage students in the art curriculum using the board.
Music: This week, students K-3 have started the fifth week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Third grade will be reviewing their repertoire learned throughout the year.
Library: In library class, kindergarten and first grade students learned about a computer science concept called data visualization. In kindergarten, students looked at pictures of items sorted by size and then made their own visual data display using objects around the room. In first grade, students observed data of animals that traveled into space and then created a data set of animals that they would choose to take to space. Second and third grade students learned about how to identify what is real vs fake online. Students chose one example of online messages and websites. Students considered questions they could ask themselves to determine if the online message or website was real or fake. These examples included emails, website popups and websites. Then students played the 'reality river' game on Interland to reinforce their learning.
