Around the Freetown Elementary School Classrooms for the Week of May 13-17:

Pre-School:  This week in preschool we learned about ladybugs and their lifecycle.  We played number recognition games, such as rolling dice and placing this amount of ladybugs on a leaf, and matching numerals to the quantity of dots found on a ladybug.  We observed our caterpillars enter into their chrysalis stage.  We also studied the letter Y, and learned about the sound it makes.

Kindergarten:  In kindergarten this week our phonics lesson was the long o sound and the -oke ending. Our HFW were- where, look.  Our comprehension skills focused on re-reading and time order. Our PA skills were segmenting and blending syllables and phoneme identifying, blending and substitution. For writing we focused on one idea and end punctuation. Our math lesson was building shapes. We are preparing for our field trip to the zoo next week!

Grade 1:  This week in first grade we focused on r-controlled vowels -or and -ore, along with suffix -er. For comprehension we are focusing on characters, setting, and plot. We are learning about the things we see in the sky this week in both reading and science. For math, our focus was on measuring and comparing lengths using -er and -est. For writing, we are working on our animal research unit.

Grade 2: This week in second grade reading we worked on describing connections between historical events by focusing on a sequence of events; we also continued to focus on text features such as timelines and captions. In phonics we worked on reading and spelling words with the double vowel teams “au” and “aw”. In second grade math we reviewed graphing, measurement, telling and writing time to the nearest 5 minutes, and solving word problems involving money. We worked on writing fiction stories. In Science we learned about what plants need in order to survive.

Grade 3:  This week in third grade, students took their math MCAS test.  They worked hard, persevered, and shined!  Way to go third graders - we are proud of you!  In social studies, students learned about important landmarks in Freetown and Assonet.  They also learned about the Ye Freemen Purchase and the Pocasset Purchase.  Students have enjoyed learning about their hometown and making personal connections to their own lives.

Physical Education:  Students participated in their second bocce lesson. Kindergarteners played with 1 bocce and a fixed pallino and scored independently. First graders played with 2 bocces and a fixed pallino and scored independently after a few games of teacher directed play. Second and Third grade students learned how to play partner bocce and then chose to either play with partners or independent games.

Art:  Kindergarten learned about form as an element of art while they created their crazy line paper sculptures.  All other students selected 2 of their best efforts for the student art exhibit which will be held Thursday, May 23.

Music:  This week, students K-3 have started the third week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Some third grade classes are still finishing recorders this week.

Library: In library class this week, students took virtual field trips on Google Earth. Students selected their destination from a list of places.  The choices included the White House, the Grand Canyon, the Eiffel Tower and the Madrid Zoo. Students wrote about what they saw on Google Earth at these places and then read a related article on Pebble Go and wrote about what they learned from the article.
