With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies.  With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher.  Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts.  For the month of February these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student.  Congratulations to the February students that were nominated…

Other events coming up shortly…

  • March 14 will be Class Picture Day as well as Spring Individual Picture Day.  The picture day provider is Lifetouch.

  • Term II will close on Friday, March 8th and Term Two report cards will be sent home on Monday, March 18th.  If after reviewing your child’s report card and you would like to set-up a meeting with your child’s teacher please do not hesitate to do so.

  • FES will be hosting a Grade 3 MCAS Night for Grade 3 families!  A sign-up sheet was shared last week to any grade 3 family member who would like to join us.  The MCAS Night will take place on Wednesday, March 20th from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.  Attendees will learn about MCAS, take a practice test, learn about scoring reports, and learn how FES goes about setting up our students for success!  If you are interested please complete the Google Form that was sent out on March 1st.  

  • April 1 is an Early Release Day for students as voting will take place at Freetown Elementary School.  Please be advised that dismissal for April 1st will be altered for Parent Pick-up to ensure the safety of all.  Students will be dismissed out the doors at the end of the long hallway to the doors that face Bullock Road.  Therefore, parents will be able to park on the large playground blacktop (gates will be open) and walk up the designated path leading to the grade 3 doors.  Please be patient as we work together to keep all staff, students, and FES families safe. 


FES News and Happenings…

  • Grade 3 News...Students in grade 3 across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts participate in their first MCAS exam.  Students will be tested in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  The MCAS exam is a computer based exam in which students will take the exam on the computer.  MCAS dates for students in Grade 3 at FES will be:

    • April 8 & 9 for English Language Arts

    • May 14 & 15 for Mathematics 


PTO Corner:  

PTO meetings will be held in person and virtually.  The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 11th beginning at 6:30 PM.  The meeting invitation is provided below…

In and around the classrooms of Freetown Elementary for the week of March 4-8:

Pre-School:  This week in preschool, we began studying authors and illustrators, with a focus on Dr. Seuss.  Some of the books we read included The Cat in the Hat, The Foot Book, Green Eggs and Ham, There’s a Wocket in My Pocket, Ten Apples Up On Top, and One Fish, Two Fish, Green Fish, Blue Fish.  Activities included measuring various items with our feet, identifying words that rhyme, and identifying patterns.  We also reviewed the letters o, m, n, r. and l.  


Kindergarten:  This week in kindergarten was a review week in our Wonders program. We reviewed letters Ee, Hh, Ff, Rr, Bb, Ll, Kk for letter formation, phonemic awareness and phonics. Our review of HFW were-are, he, is, little, my, she, was, with. In math we built and decomposed teen numbers. We focused on the concept of teen numbers being “A group of ten and some extra ones.” 


Grade 1: This week in first grade, we finished up Unit 3 in Wonders. We focused on the vowel team “oo” like in “book” and “hook”. For comprehension we focused on identifying main topics and details. In writing, we are working on the opinion unit. Students are learning to state their opinions and give reasons why. For math this week, we are learning how to show a 2 digit number in different ways using tens and ones. Our science activities included planting seeds so we can watch how they grow and change. 


Grade 2:  This week in second grade reading we continued to work on comparing and contrasting characters and stories. In phonics we read and spelled multisyllabic words with the double vowel team spellings “ea”, “ee”, “ie” and “ey” for the long /e/ sound. In math we learned how to estimate and worked on measuring lengths using different units. In writing we wrote personal narratives and fictional narratives. We celebrated Read Across America on Monday with various literacy activities.


Grade 3: This week in third grade, students learned how to identify the area of a given shape.  In reading, students explored the essential question: how do animals adapt to challenges in their habitat?  Students used a variety of stories to explore this question.  In social studies, students continued to review the causes of the American Revolution.  They learned about the causes, actions, and results of the Boston Massacre with the American Revolution.


Art:  Kindergarteners learned to mix primary colors to make secondary colors while creating with finger paint.  Grade 1 completed their 3 scoop value ice cream cone projects.  Grade 2 painted values to show distance in their hills of Ireland landscape.  Grade 3 enjoyed creating prints from styrofoam engravings.


Physical Education:  Students stretched, balanced and strengthened their muscles by learning different yoga poses.


Music: This week, students K-3 have started the 6th and final week of their unit on listening. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will listen to music for dynamics, tempo and directions as well as music from Haydn. 2nd grade will listen to music of Beethoven and respond to vocal and instrumental musical elements. 3rd grade will listen to music to evaluate their own performance on the recorder.


Library: For Read Across America Week, students in kindergarten and first grade listened to the story "When Rubin Plays" by Gracey Zhang. We talked about perseverance and watched a video about perseverance from PBS Kids. Students created a drawing and wrote about a time they showed perseverance using the Seesaw website. Second and third grade students listened to the story "Saffron Ice Cream" by Rashin Kheiriyeah. Students worked on crossword puzzles, word searches and memory games on the Reading is Fundamental website.
