In and around the classrooms of Freetown Elementary for the week of February 26-March 1:
Pre-School: This week in preschool we studied heart health, dental health, germ prevention, and Leap Year. We sorted pictures of healthy and unhealthy foods. We learned how to brush our teeth properly and how to floss. We practiced brushing and flossing on a pretend mouth. We began learning about the letter R and its sound. We learned about Leap Year through a variety of math games, such as searching for frogs around the classroom and counting them and hopping onto lily pads while naming the numbers on them.
Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten we focused on the letter Kk. We learned when to use c or k at the beginning of a word as well as the ck/k/ sound at the end of a word. Our HFWs- she, was. In math, we counted teen numbers and continued with the concept of teen numbers being 1 group of 10 and some extra ones. We also learned about Leap Year and wrote about what we’d like to do with our extra day.
Grade 1: This week in first grade we reviewed magic e words. For comprehension, we reviewed identifying the main topic and retelling key details. In writing, we have started the opinion unit. Students will be writing their opinions on different topics/ideas. In math, we are adding and subtracting tens. In science, we are starting to learn about plants and how they grow and change.
Grade 2: This week in second grade reading we worked on comparing and contrasting characters and their points of view. In phonics we learned about the double vowel team spellings “ea”, “ee” and “ey” for the long /e/ sound. In math we began to explore tools for measurement and measuring length. In writing we continued to work on our personal narratives. We celebrated Read Across America throughout the week with Dr. Seuss readings and activities.
Grade 3: This week in third grade, we worked on reviewing telling time to the nearest minute as well as elapsed time within word problems. In reading, we read a realistic fiction story called, “The Talented Clementine.” We discussed how the character changed from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. This story led to many wonderful discussions of special talents and skills people have that can be shared with others. In writing, students did a great job completing an MCAS practice by reading a story, answering multiple choice questions, and completing an essay using the RACES acronym to help guide and organize their responses. In social studies, students started a new unit about the American Revolution. They learned five causes of the American Revolution and what it meant to live in this time period.
Art: Kindergarteners are learning the primary colors and created a fun painting after learning about the art of Alexander Calder. Grade 1 students are learning how to create different values of colors by adding white and black (tints and shades) while creating a fun ice cream scoop pop art painting. Grade 2 is also learning how to create different values of blue while they create a beautiful Japanese vase and cherry blossoms project. Grade 3 is starting their second printmaking project. While the last type was a monoprint (one of a kind), this time they are creating an engraving on styrofoam. Next week, we will be able to get many prints from this one engraving.
Physical Education: This week we finish our basketball skills unit. Second and Third grade classes will finish practicing dribbling, shooting and passing skills and then will play a game of Scrabble Ball which will have students using all three skills to earn scrabble letters for their teams. Kindergarten and First graders will practice the skills in stations.
Music: This week, students K-3 have started the 5th week of their unit on listening. Grade 1 and Kindergarten will listen to music for dynamics, tempo and directions as well as music from Haydn. 2nd grade will listen to music of Beethoven and respond to vocal and instrumental musical elements. 3rd grade will listen to music to evaluate their own performance on the recorder.
Library: During library class this week, kindergarten and first grade students learned about Internet safety. Students were presented with the lesson "Bean Goes on the Internet" through the website Seesaw and then students created a poster on Seesaw to show how they would stay safe on the Internet. Second and third grade students learned about the difference between facts and opinions. We read "Facts vs. Opinions vs. Robots" and then students studied an item found in the library and wrote three facts and three opinions about it in Google Slides.
