Mr. Ward’s Message:
With each passing month it is with great pride at Freetown Elementary School that we continue the deep, embedded tradition of Student of Month ceremonies. With each month a student from each classroom is nominated by peers and/or their teacher. Students nominated have put forth their best efforts in their school work, behavior, and efforts. For the month of April these students best exemplify what it means to be a Freetown Elementary Student. Congratulations to the April students that were nominated…

News and Happenings from the classrooms for the week of May 15-19:
Pre-School: This week in preschool we learned about a new Lively Letter, letter y, a famous skier who says “y-y-yikes” when he is about to ski down a very steep mountain. The preschoolers used yellow yarn to practice the correct formation of the letter y. They also participated in some yoga exercises in honor of the letter y. We continued our farm theme, with a specific focus on pigs, goats, and sheep. One class played a shape recognition game using pigs noses/snouts. We also began studying the life cycle of a butterfly. Our caterpillars are now in their cocoons and have entered the chrysalis stage!
Kindergarten: This week in kindergarten our Fundations lesson was to read words/sentences and write sentences from dictation. In our Wonders curriculum our HF words were- play, too. Our comprehension skills were to reread and cause and effect. Print concepts were a review of left/right & top/bottom tracking, parts of a book and capitalization of the first word in a sentence. In writing, we focused on expository writing and capitalization, sequencing and adjectives. In math we built shapes. We’ve started a science unit on the butterfly life cycles. We have caterpillars in our classrooms and have been observing and recording their life cycle.
Grade 1: This week in first grade we started Unit 13 in FUNdations. Our focus was on multisyllabic words like blacktop and pumpkin. For comprehension we reviewed characters, setting and problem and solution. In writing we finished up the poetry unit and started working on letter writing. For math this week, we compared and ordered lengths of objects. In science, we are continuing to learn about plants.
Grade 2: This week in second grade math we reviewed telling and writing time to the nearest 5 minutes, solving word problems involving money, graphing, and measurement. In Fundations we worked on reading and spelling words with consonant -le syllables such as freckle and tumble. In reading we continued to compare and contrast texts. In writing we worked on opinion writing and learned about how to state an opinion and supply reasons to support an opinion. In Science we learned about what plants need in order to survive.
Grade 3: This week, the third graders took the math MCAS test. They worked hard and felt confident. In social studies, students continued to learn about Freetown’s geography, important landmarks, and how the fire and police stations have developed over time. Students had the opportunity to meet and ask questions to a few Freetown selectmen. They learned about how town selectmen make a difference in the community, their biggest challenges, what inspired them to become selectmen, and other great conversations about their roles within the town. This was an interesting and memorable experience for all!
Music: This week, students K-3 have started the third week of their unit on performance. Grade 1 and Kindergarten are practicing performing by learning new songs such as Wishy Washy and No More Pie. 2nd grade will expand their musicianship by continuing to practice for our Star Spangled Spectacular. Some third grade classes are still finishing recorders this week.
Physical Education: All classes continued learning about and practicing the lifetime activity of Bocce. In the game of bocce students practice the underhand roll, develop strategies for successful gameplay, practice good sportsmanship, and in partner bocce learn to work together with a teammate. Kindergarten students played independent games of 1 ball bocce with a fixed pallino and learned how to keep score. First Graders learned how to play 2 ball bocce with a fixed pallino and learned how to keep score with a possible total of 2 points per game. Second and Third grade students learned how to play partner bocce with a possible total score of 4 points per game.
Art: Kindergarteners were introduced to form as an element of art. They explored centers where they created 3D art with blocks, beads and straws and connectors. Grade 1-3 students reviewed their portfolio and chose their best work to display in the annual FES Student Art Show.
