Laker Nation has entered February and winter seems to have finally hit us. Brrrrr. We encourage you to curl up with a good book in frosty weather and our Library is here to help! The ARHS library is a SAILS member and happy to find you any book in the SAILS member network. We even have a Book Club and a Reading Challenge:
The “Booked at Apponequet” club has chosen the selections for the February book read. Members can opt between the following choices: “The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller; “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus; and “If You Come Softly” by Jacqueline Woodson. All new members are welcome to join. For more information or to get a copy of the book, please see Mrs. O’Brien in the library.
Hey ARHS community! Come join Mrs. O’Brien in an independent reading challenge as we Read Across the USA! From February through May we will be traveling down the east coast. How does it work? Each month will focus on a few different states that make up the east coast. Participants who read a book which takes place in any of the states showcased and then complete a short review of the book will be entered into a drawing for a great prize! The more states you read, the more chances there are to win. Additional prizes will be awarded in June. All students and staff are invited to participate. For February we will travel through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. For more information and to receive a suggested list of titles, please visit the library website or see Mrs. O’Brien in the library.

Laker Nation hosted an E-Fair (Enroll, Enlist, Employ) on February 3rd . Students had the opportunity to visit over 20 programs highlighting vocational/trade/military options after high school. Also sponsored by the Guidance Department are the upcoming class meetings to discuss the Program of Studies and class choices for next year. You and your student are invited to reach out to your guidance counselor to plan the best school year ever in 2023-24! And don’t forget to save the date for Parent/Guardian-Teacher Night from 5-7 pm on March 9th.
Health Screening Notification
9th and 10th grade students will have health screenings in the spring semester. The school nurse will administer the screenings for hearing, vision, body-mass index and posture; while the SBIRT screening will be done by the guidance department. The SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) program is related to the use of alcohol, marijuana and other substances. The goal of this program is to let the students know that we are available to reinforce healthy decisions and to assist them in obtaining support if needed for substance use related problems.
All screenings will be conducted confidentially in private one-on-one sessions. Results of the SBIRT screenings will not be included in your student’s school record nor with the state or any other agency. As with any school screening, you have the right to opt your child out of this state mandate. You are able to opt your child out of the screening by sending an email to kdessert@freelake.org. If you have any questions about the state screening programs please feel free to contact us.
It’s the sophomore’s chance to shine at the Sophomore semi-formal dance at Rachel’s Lakeside on March 3rd from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm. Tickets are $45 and will be sold after school on February 6th, 7th, and 9th. Please contact mpacelli@freelake.org with any questions.
