As we head into May, students are focused on AP exams, SAT testing, and a strong finish to the 23-24 school  year. We welcome back our DECA students from California.  Nine of our DECA students had a wonderful experience at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA, alongside over 25,000 students from across the world. They attended workshops, built leadership skills, learned how to enhance our DECA chapter, competed in their categories, and made Apponequet proud.

The first annual Laker Film Festival was a blast! Six student films were viewed and the winners are presented below. A highlight was also the noir film featuring Mr. Solomon, Mr. Tully, Ms. Mordini, Mr. Levesque puppeteering, and Mr. Murphy as narrator.

A learning lesson from our own AP Spanish student, Logan Froio:

image of a boy with a sombrero carrying the mexican flag

Cinco de Mayo this year marks the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, in which Mexico defeated the French army of Napoleon lll. The battle began because of Mexico’s declaration of a temporary moratorium (postponing of payment) on the repayment of foreign debts to England, Spain and France. After Mexico resolved its conflicts with both England and Spain, Napoleon decided that France needed to seize Mexico and reinstate France’s title of a once imperialistic country. The Mexican forces however, defeated the much stronger and better equipped French forces and were able to fend off, but later fell to the French. Mexico continued fighting and eventually France gave up their occupation of Mexico and it was on this day that Mexico finally was free again. It is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is the independence day of Mexico, however now you know that is untrue, and that it is a day of celebration for Mexico that celebrates the strength and perseverance of their people!!

Tengan un buen fin de semana!
