Greetings, Laker Nation! We are proud to present our most recent achievements.
Twenty-six of our DECA students competed against students from across the state at the J.A. Titan Challenge. “JA Titan is a simulation-based program in which high school students compete as business CEOs in the phone industry, experiencing firsthand how an organization evaluates alternatives, makes decisions, analyzes the outcomes of those decisions, and then strategizes what to do next. With a focus on financial literacy and insights into the workforce, JA Titan brings business economics to life. As students work in teams, or on their own, to make financial decisions about production, marketing, research and development (R&D), and corporate social responsibility (CSR), they begin to see how every choice made in an organization relates to its future success.”
Apponequet's team of Judson Cardinali, Logan Frias and Tyler Gray earned a first Place finish in the JA Titan Challenge at UMASS Dartmouth. Each member of the winning team earned a $1,000 college scholarship. Twenty-seven Apponequet students competed in the Cell Phone Business Simulation.
Also, see our champion Honor Bowl team, who took home second place this year, by one question.
Our annual Music in our Schools was a great success, featuring Concert Band, Jazz Band, Choir, and select choirs.

The Equity Team has also created a board to inform the community about Ramadan, which began this week. Weekly communications to the staff and students highlight facts about the practice. This week we focus on the connection to the lunar cycle.
As we approach this sacred month for Muslims around the world, it's a perfect time to delve into the celestial mechanics that guide this important time of reflection, prayer, and fasting.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, known as the Hijri calendar. Unlike the Gregorian calendar that most of us are familiar with, which follows the solar year, the Hijri calendar is based on the cycles of the moon. This means that the start and end of each month are determined by the sighting of the new moon.
The lunar cycle of Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon, which marks the start of the month. This sighting is traditionally done by human observers, looking to the skies to catch a glimpse of the slender crescent moon after sunset. Once the new moon is sighted, the fasting period of Ramadan begins the next day.
The lunar cycle continues throughout Ramadan, with each night bringing changes to the appearance of the moon. As the days progress, the moon waxes, growing larger and brighter in the night sky. This progression symbolizes the journey of the month, a time of spiritual growth, self-reflection, and increased devotion.
Finally, the end of Ramadan is marked by the sighting of the new moon once again. This signals the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, a joyous celebration that brings the fasting period to a close. Eid al-Fitr is a time of feasting, giving thanks, and sharing with those less fortunate.
Understanding the lunar cycle of Ramadan not only provides insight into the Islamic calendar but also offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions around the world. We encourage you to take this opportunity to learn more about Ramadan, its significance, and the diverse ways in which it is celebrated.
