Hello Laker Nation! It has been a full week of Laker sporting tournaments, educational trips, and college planning, to name just a few. First, we welcome back the students and staff who visited Washington DC this past weekend.
“My favorite thing…”:
Museum of Natural Science - BB (and see the dinosaur memento from the trip for A&P class)
Air and Space Museum - Nattea
MLK Monument - Lucas
Botanical Garden - Jake and Olivia
Natural History Museum - Ryan
Lincoln Memorial (at night!) - Josh
Portrait Gallery - Lexi and Mrs. Barnicoat
National Harbor - Mrs. Motta
Gift Shops! - Camille
Holocaust Museum - Lillian
Grace and Angie enjoyed making new friends and experiencing a place that was so “impactful” that it eclipsed the everyday.
Mrs. Barnicoat and Mr. Solomon are so proud of our students who showed the respect and reverence these monuments deserve, while bonding, smiling, walking (lots of walking!), and playing board games at night. They look forward to another trip next year!
And Bon Voyage to 85 DECA students and the advisors and chaperones heading to State competition in Boston. We will keep you updated on their successes.

Thursday was BCC Palooza, an annual event in which 12th grade students engage in on the spot admissions for Bristol Community College. Thirty-six students were accepted and are poised to make their choices for post-secondary education in the next few months. Thank you, Guidance Department, for supporting this event.
Our LIFE Club spearheaded the initiative to bring attention to disorders and to support those suffering and their loved ones.
Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that causes seizures. 1.2% of Americans have active epilepsy and 65 million people have active epilepsy globally. Additionally, about 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy at some point during their lifetime. T
Cerebral Palsy (CP) awareness! CP refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination. CP is one of the most common childhood disorders in the United States, affecting approximately 1 in 345 children and about 70% of CP cases are the result of a birth injury. There are currently around 1 million people of all ages living with CP in the U.S.
- Students and staff wore blue on Wednesday, signing the banner and taking the pledge for Spread the Word, thereby stepping into the role of a leader committed to shaping a more inclusive world. The pledge signifies a powerful stance against derogatory language targeted at individuals with intellectual disabilities and that commitment calls for change, inspiring others to follow suit and join the collective effort to eliminate discriminatory language. Together, we can create a society where everyone is valued, celebrated and free from the impact of harmful stereotypes.
- We wore orange, on Thursday, to spread Developmental Disability awareness! Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. About one in six children in the U.S. have one or more developmental disabilities or other developmental delays. Some of the most common developmental disabilities are ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, hearing loss, intellectual disability, learning disability, vision impairment, and other developmental delays.
- On Friday, we wore our funkiest, craziest socks to spread Down Syndrome awareness! Down syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21. Down syndrome remains the most common chromosomal condition diagnosed in the United States. Each year, about 6,000 babies born in the United States have Down syndrome. This means that Down syndrome occurs in about 1 in every 700 babies. Down Syndrome Awareness Day is celebrated on 3/21. We will, again, bring focus upon this day and support and stand by those with Down Syndrome and those who love someone with Down Syndrome.
