The Social Studies Department would like to thank all of the 11th grade students who participated in the 2023 Voice of Democracy Contest.  This contest was established in 1947 and is an audio-essay contest which provides high school students with the opportunity to express themselves on topics of patriotism and democracy. Apponequet Regional High School has partnered with Freetown VFW Post 6643 since the 1980s. This year’s topic: What are the greatest attributes of our democracy? This year’s three winners from the 11th grade US History classes are:

3rd place: Judson Cardinelli

2nd place: Eugene Jung

1st place: Gabby Fernandes

Each will present their speeches at the VFW at a luncheon with veterans and the students and their families where they will be awarded a monetary prize and plaque for their success. Gabby will record her speech and it will travel to district-level competition and potentially on to state and national level. We wish her luck and thank all participants!

Several Lakers, including Dylan Belleton, Maripat Manley, Rayley Martins, Zack Paretchan, Lily Rogers, Morgan Saraceno, Ashley Silva, Claire Tomaszewski, and Conor Tripp also made offensive contributions with multiple assists setting up their teammates for success and creating a path to the basket.  Defensively, there were stand-out performances from Jonathan Earl, Lindsey Lebeau, Ashley Silva, Abigail Travassos, Claire Tomaszewski, Zoe Trinque and Conor Tripp. These athletes fought hard to steal the ball, block shots and secure rebounds. Overall, the Lakers shined bright against Bourne with all players contributing to this win while embodying sportsmanship, teamwork and the spirit of inclusion. A special shout out to Matthew Barboza for his exceptional spectator skills and maintaining a positive morale among his teammates.  You can catch your Unified Lakers in action again next Wednesday November 1st at 3:30 pm at Joseph Case High School.  Go Lakers!
