Grade one students learned about African American artist, Alma Woodsey Thomas. We made paintings with short lines.
Grade two continued their Pop Art Names. We watched a clip from the Tate Gallery in London.
Grade three students were introduced to Ms. T’s all-time favorite artist, Keith Haring. You can check out this KID FRIENDLY site, www.haringkids.com.
Music:
K: This week we are working on the unpitched percussion instruments, keeping a beat as well as using pool noodles to keep a beat. We are also working on our rhythm patterns.
1st: If you have not sent in a clean, OVERSIZED white t-shirt to tie-dye for the Grandparent’s Day performance, please do so ASAP!
2nd: This week we are learning about Italy and studying a little about the culture as well as dancing the Tarantella!
3rd: This week we are reviewing the notes of the treble clef staff and learning how to correctly draw them using dry erase boards.
Library:
All classes in grades K to 3 are preparing for World Read Aloud Day on February 1st! On WRAD, six different authors are going to meet virtually with all of our classes throughout the school day. Students will have the opportunity to ask the author questions as well as listen to them read their book!
This week, each class in the library is listening to one of the books by their author and we are brainstorming questions to ask on the Google Meet next week. Very fun and exciting!
Also, save the date for our Scholastic Book Fair--The Book Fair is coming February 6th to the 10th!
PE
This week in PE we are continuing to work toward our new year's resolution to be healthier and grow stronger muscles. Students in all grades are warming up and then playing Mario Kart. This game inspired by the popular Nintendo game features students racing around the gym on scooter boards (a great leg workout) trying to avoid being hit by the ¨turtle shells” being thrown by another team. If you are hit by a turtle shell, students have to complete an exercise to reenter the game. In grade 3 our goal is to increase the amount of push-ups and sit-ups we can do, so we are doing those exercises to reenter the game.
Kindergarten
This week in Wonders the question was What do people use to do their jobs? This question led to lots of discussions about different jobs, uniforms, and the tools that are used for each job. We read an informational text, Whose Shoes?, and the students had to identify the shoes and the job that went with them. In Fundations we continue to segment and blend cvc words and practice writing both upper and lower case letters. In writing we are working on writing sentences, using proper punctuation and leaving spaces between words. In math we started to learn about the concept of subtraction “as taking away” and using the minus sign. We practiced this skill by acting out number stories and singing songs like Five Green and Speckled Frogs,to help the students understand the concept.
Grade 1
The essential question this week in our Wonders program is, What is a folktale? We learned that a folktale is a story that was made up a long time ago and has been retold over and over again. This week we read two folktales called, The Nice Mitten and The Gingerbread Man. In our Fundations program we continue to learn about “glued sounds”. This week we have been working on reading and writing words with -ng and -nk endings (sing, fang, song, lung, bank, honk, junk, pink).
Grade 2
Second Graders have been working very hard this week! In Reading, they have begun Wonders Unit 2 Week 3. This week is focusing on fables. The students are learning what elements fables have, such as teaching a lesson or moral, learning new vocabulary words and practicing sequencing events in a story. The essential question that these stories are based upon is “What can animals in stories teach us?” In math we are continuing with 2 digit addition and have introduced regrouping. This is an important skill that we want the students to have confidence in. Second grade is in unit 7 of Fundations. We have begun a unit on bodies of water for science and are excited to learn more and eventually move on to landforms.
Counselor’s Corner:
Responsibility and What It Means For Children
This week students have been discussing what it means to be responsible at home and in school. Being responsible means putting in your best effort and working hard to make expected choices. One aspect of responsibility that students are struggling with is being honest and accepting consequences for mistakes. Children need to understand that everyone makes mistakes and even though it can be difficult to admit the truth when mistakes are made (children often fear ‘getting into trouble’), taking responsibility is an expected piece of child development. Additionally, being responsible assists in developing and maintaining friendships. Children want to have friends who follow rules and exhibit expected behaviors as those choices show that friends can be trusted and have respect for others. If you are looking for ways to talk with your children about being responsible, Scholastics Books has several books available at this link:
