Holiday Shoppe is a week-long event that allows all students the opportunity to get into the spirit of gift giving. Students are able to purchase inexpensive, yet thoughtful, gifts for their families and friends during a designated time at school. Detailed paperwork will be sent home in the coming weeks.

To make this event successful we need:

  • Lots of volunteers to help the children shop

  • Wrapping supplies such as small gift bags, wrapping paper, tissue paper, tape, etc.

Supplies can be dropped off in the main office during regular school hours, any time before December 14th, and/or sent in with your children. Please mark them c/o PTO. Volunteers can sign up using the SignUpGenius that will be sent out November 21st

 A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Kindergarten students turned the beloved Pigeon into a turkey!

Grade one students discussed the difference between hot and cold colors, then proceeded to create line designs using cold colors only.

Grade 2 students finished their balloon animal paintings.

Grade 3 students had “catch up” week (aka ketchup), finishing any incomplete work.

 Music:

K: This week in K, we talked about Thanksgiving and worked on a fun Thanksgiving song with instruments. We practiced making our instruments “sing” with us!

1st: This week the first graders worked on a Thanksgiving Turkey song and practiced playing the steady beat on unpitched percussion instruments. Afterwards, we worked on our rhythm patterns and played a fun song.

2nd: This week the second graders worked on hearing the difference between a beat in music vs a rhythm. We used various genres of music while passing egg shakers to the beat.  After, we played a game with rhythm patterns.

3rd: The 3rd graders are prepping for their big concert which will be help on Wednesday, December 14 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium!

*If you have not sent in your order form/check for the recorder yet, please try to do so ASAP. If you would like another copy, please e-mail and I will send one home with your child.  Thanks for supporting our music program! deacobacci@freelake.org

Library:

Booksgiving is here! Many thanks to everyone that donated books for this wonderful literacy event! Thanks to all the donations, students will be able to choose up to 2 new books to add to their personal library collection. We are still taking donations, especially chapter books! Thanks again!

Kindergarten

This week we  focused on the essential question, “How can your senses help you learn?” This led to some great discussions about how we use our senses on a daily basis.  We used the book, “Senses at the Seashore,” to introduce nonfiction texts.  We are learning the letters Jj and Pp and the sight word, see.  In Math, we are configuring, building, and writing the numbers 8 and 9.  We also have been learning about the Thanksgiving Holiday and we are very excited for our upcoming mini feast!

Grade 1

This week we have been practicing words with bonus letters and we also learned about jobs that need to be done in our community.  We read The Red Hat and learned all about the responsibilities that firefighters have.  Please remember to bring in your “Turkey in Disguise.”

Grade 2

This week in 2nd grade our essential question focused on “How friends depend on each other.”  We read several fantasy stories and we discussed the elements of fantasy and compared it to the elements of fiction. In Fundations we started learning about base words and suffixes.  In math we are working on strategies for solving 2 step word problems.

The 2nd grade teachers would like to wish all families a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.  We are all thankful for our wonderful students!

Grade 3

In third grade we are wrapping up Unit 2 in math and moving into Unit 3, which deals with problem solving. The children will learn clue words to help them identify the correct operation needed to solve the problems, and will work on explaining their math thinking. In reading we are finishing Unit 1 in our new Wonders program and will move into Unit 2 after the holiday weekend. In social studies we are finishing our study of the Wampanoag people and the Pilgrims.

Nurse’s Nook:

Dear Families,

Cold and flu season is here.  The Department of Public Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics have stated that the Northeast and much of the US are seeing an increase in respiratory illness in infants and children, some of which are requiring hospitalization.

Many illnesses are caused by respiratory infections such as:

     Rhinovirus

      RSV- respiratory syncytial virus

       Enterovirus

        Influenza

Children are more susceptible to these illnesses during the fall and winter months,  even more so this year as there has been limited exposure to these viruses previously. As it is anticipated that there could be more respiratory illnesses as RSV continues to spread and the flu season continues we would like give a few tips on staying healthy this season:

  • Practice good hand hygiene, wash hand for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or sanitizer if unavailable, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow

  • Keep children home if there is difficulty breathing with shortness of breath, cough, congestion, runny nose or sore throat until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medications that reduce fever.

  • Clean high touch surfaces frequently with household disinfectants

  • Avoid social gatherings if you or your children are ill

  • Contact a healthcare provider if you or your child needs medical care - your health care provider can advise you on what type of care you need.

Thank you for helping to keep everyone healthy this season. Nurse Nancy

Counselor’s Corner:

Bus Safety for All

Last week AES students reviewed bus safety and practiced evacuating their school bus should the need arise. Students who are daily drop-offs and pick-ups also participated for the times when they will ride a school bus for a field trip.

Morning arrival and afternoon dismissal are very busy times as the school staff are working to ensure almost 500 students arrive and leave school safety.  Families can also do their part to practice safety by driving slowly through the school driveway and STOPPING when you see the school van or bus lights are flashing.  The flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is going to stop, and the flashing red lights/stop signs indicate that children are either getting on or off the bus.  Flashing red lights mean STOP!

We understand that families have activities after school, however, it is the LAW to stop for school buses and there is a fine should a police officer be present.  Recently we have had several cars drive past our school buses and vans while the red lights are flashing.  We ask that families please pay attention to the buses so all of our AES students can remain safe.
