This was one of my absolute FAVORITE weeks here at AES as we celebrated VETERANS DAY and students engaged in our annual assembly and placing of the American Flags on the lawn of the school!  It is a very important holiday and the staff and students had a great week here celebrating all the men and women that have served and continue to do so for our freedom!  I am SO proud of the behavior of students during the assembly and during the placing of flags and it is always such a day of PRIDE for us to show our support for Veterans.  A few pics to share:

 BOOKSGIVING:  Booksgiving.pdf

Please check out our flyer for our first BOOKSGIVING and join the fun!

This is a great way for your child to come home with some books that are brand new to them.  Every child will get a book!  A shout out to Mrs. Sylvain for hosting such a great event!  We are looking for some more chapter books and welcome you to send in multiple books if you so wish!  Thank you for assisting to make this event a success!  What a great way for kiddos to get a brand new book!

 A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Kindergarten students learned how to make coils (“snakes”) out of modeling clay, turning them into the letters of their names.

Grade one students completed their gumball machine designs.

Grade two students learned how to make fancy frames for their balloon animal paintings.

Grade three students completed their bull skull paintings. One can be seen here.

 Music:

All classes K-3 did such a fantastic job singing at our Veterans Day assembly!

K: This week we learned a Fall song and worked with High vs Low sounds. We used unpitched percussion instruments as well as scarves to help show the differences.

1st: First graders worked on using poetry to keep the beat with unpitched percussion instruments as well as played a game of Fall Tic-Tac-Toe.

2nd: This week in 2nd grade, we worked on using a poem to keep the beat with unpitched percussion instruments.

3rd: Third graders are working on preparing for their big Winter concert which will be held on Wednesday, December 14th @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium!

PE

This week in PE we are playing tag games. Students in Grades 2 and 3 are playing pac-man tag; and a few variations of the game. When tagged students must complete 5 push-ups. We are really focused on developing great form and are practicing modified push-ups to properly bend at the elbow, and keep a flat back. In grade K and 1, we are also playing pac man tag and practicing being great at jumping jacks. When tagged students must complete their age in jumping jacks to reenter the game.

Library:

Our first annual Booksgiving is almost here! This is a great way for our families to share their love of books and reading by participating in a school wide book swap! We are very excited and please keep the books coming in! We are accepting books until Thursday, November 16th. Thanks so much!

Kindergarten

This week we  focused on the essential question, “How do baby animals move?”   We reviewed what a noun is and worked on comprehension skills with the book, “Pouch!”  We are learning the letters Ee and Rr and the sight word, we.   In Math, we are building groups of 6 and 7 and figuring out how to make different combinations of 6 and 7.  On Tuesday, we celebrated Veterans Day by having an assembly and we also “planted” a  flag to honor our great men and women.

Grade 1

This week we learned how animals and people move.  We realized that we both move in similar ways. Also, we reviewed the different types of sentences and practiced the correct punctuation to use. In addition, we learned all about Veterans Day and placed flags on the front lawn to recognize all that have served.

Grade 2

This week in 2nd grade retired AES teacher Mrs. Martin taught a lesson to the children about Veterans Day. The children learned about Mr Hitchcock, and the reason why our AES playground is named after him.  2 local Veterans came into classes and read a story about Veterans day.  The children made Thank you cards and letters to send to a local military unit.

Grade 3

This week we have been learning about Veterans’ Day, and just by chance, the reading selections have a lot of relevance. In reading we are learning about national monuments, memorials, and symbols of the US. The kids are making lots of connections. It’s also wonderful to have the internet to go deeper into our discussions and wonderings. We looked at Arlington National Cemetery, including the eternal flame on JFK’s grave, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We watched a changing of the guard at the tomb.

In math we are beginning to solve word problems using multiplication and division. In social studies we are wrapping up our study of the Wampanoag and Pilgrims just in time for Thanksgiving.

Bus Safety for All

Last week AES students reviewed bus safety and practiced evacuating their school bus should the need arise. Students who are daily drop-offs and pick-ups also participated for the times they will ride a school bus for a field trip.

Morning arrival and afternoon dismissal are very busy times as the school staff are working to ensure almost 500 students arrive and leave school safety.  Families can also do their part to practice safety by driving slowly through the school driveway and STOPPING when you see the school van or bus lights are flashing.  The flashing yellow lights indicate the bus is going to stop, and the flashing red lights/stop signs indicate that children are either getting on or off the bus.  Flashing red lights mean STOP!

We understand that families have activities after school, however, it is the LAW to stop for school buses and there is a fine should a police officer be present.  Recently we have had several cars drive past our school buses and vans while the red lights are flashing.  We ask that families please pay attention to the buses so all of our AES students can remain safe.

Nurse’s Nook:

Dear Families,

Cold and flu season is here.  The Department of Public Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics have stated that the Northeast and much of the US are seeing an increase in respiratory illness in infants and children, some of which are requiring hospitalization.

Many illnesses are caused by respiratory infections such as:

     Rhinovirus

      RSV- respiratory syncytial virus

       Enterovirus

        Influenza

Children are more susceptible to these illnesses during the fall and winter months,  even more so this year as there has been limited exposure to these viruses previously. As it is anticipated that there could be more respiratory illnesses as RSV continues to spread and the flu season continues we would like give a few tips on staying healthy this season:

  • Practice good hand hygiene, wash hand for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or sanitizer if unavailable, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow

  • Keep children home if there is difficulty breathing with shortness of breath, cough, congestion, runny nose or sore throat until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medications that reduce fever.

  • Clean high touch surfaces frequently with household disinfectants

  • Avoid social gatherings if you or your children are ill

  • Contact a healthcare provider if you or your child needs medical care - your health care provider can advise you on what type of care you need.

Thank you for helping to keep everyone healthy this season. Nurse Nancy
