A note from Mrs. McKenna - School Adjustment Counselor:  October is Bullying Prevention Month, as well as Halloween so students are combining the two in an effort to remember strategies in dealing with bullying situations.  Remember bullying is when one person has power over the other and the behaviors happen more than once.  Here are a few strategies that may help:

STICK UP - Stand up for yourself; be assertive and tell the bully to stop.

BE SWEET - Try being kind or including the bully; ask if he/she wants to play.

GO GHOST - Pretend the bully is invisible; ignore the bullying behavior.

FLY AWAY - Walk away from the bully and situation.

SMILE - Take a deep breath, smile and stay calm so you can make a good choice.

HOOT HOOT - Tell an adult you trust about the bullying.

 A look into our classrooms:

Art:

Kinders ready the book The Color Monster, a book about how colors can help us express our feelings. They colored the monster bodies, and will complete them next week.

Grade one students were introduced to oil pastels to create short, energetic lines in the style of Vincent van Gogh.

Grade two students completed their Hundertwasser style buildings.

Grade three students are beginning observation drawings of an actual bull’s skull that Ms. T. purchased in New Mexico. They are learning about scale and proportion.

 Music:

This week all classes in K-2 are working on fun Halloween songs, using the xylophones! We are working on proper mallet technique and how to play the instruments appropriately. All of the kids are working on not only keeping  a steady beat, but also paying special patterns on the xylophones.

The 3rd graders are prepping for their Winter concert, which will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium.

Library:

Students in Kindergarten are  reviewing the parts of the book and are learning about the different types of books in the library. Students in first grade are learning about the non-fiction section and the Dewey Decimal System. Students in grade 2 are logging into the Library’s google classroom for the first time while students in third grade are also logging into the Library’s google classroom and logging into their Destiny accounts.

PE

This week in PE we are continuing our soccer unit. Students in all grades are continuing to practice dribbling, passing, and moving in open space. Students in grades 1-3 are playing a game called Line Soccer where students are able to practice defense, shooting, moving with the ball, and playing goalie.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students have started a new reading curriculum: Wonders. This week, we explored two big books—The Big Book of Rhymes which provides nursery rhymes for us to read and interact with, and Animals in the Park: An ABC Book, which we will continue to use as an anchor text for the next few weeks. We have begun to learn about vowels with the letters Ii and Uu and are practicing isolating beginning sounds. In Math, we are learning all about the number 5. We are making, counting and working to configure groups of 5 objects.

Grade 1

Grade 1 has started a new Reading Curriculum this week called Wonders.  We are kicking off the program by reading the book, "This School Year Will Be The Best!" and answering the question of the week, "What do you do at your school?".  The children are excited about their new reading materials and are adjusting to the new routine well.  We are also working on trick words, "the, a, and, is, his, of" while learning how to write sentences.  In Math, we are learning how to add and subtract within 10 and are continuing to practice counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's.  We are also enjoying bringing math concepts to life by utilizing transition times to quickly review various math skills.  We welcome Fall and the crisp cool air and colorful leaves.

Grade 2

This week is Fire Prevention Week.

This year's FPW campaign, “Fire won't wait. Plan your escape”, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. The

second graders read “No Dragons for Tea” Fire Safety for Kids (and Dragons) by Jean E. Pendziwol. The  students responded to this text by participating in  a variety of language arts activities and classroom discussions. The second graders also had an opportunity to visit with the Lakeville Fire Department here at school. Thank you Lakeville Fire Fighters for a great visit.

Grade 3

Grade 3 has jumped into our new reading curriculum, Wonders. We are busy exploring all the materials and features and look forward to sharing it all with our students.

In math we are looking at number patterns and how they relate to multiplication and division. In social studies we are learning about the New England states and their capitals.

We are busy planning for National STEM week, which is next week. We will be doing an engineering/building project/experiment across the third grade next week. We know the kids will have a lot of fun with it!
