What another week here at AES! Friday we held our second School Wide Ceremony on “accepting differences” and “safety!” October is Bullying Prevention Month - bullying is a topic that we discuss regularly throughout the day with students where we encourage and focus on being kind, respectful and accepting of all! The following was shown on Friday during our Ceremony:
Small Talk | Differences | CBC Kids
As we continue to work on Accepting Difference, it is important that we work together! This is a TAUGHT skill. How many times do we ask our children …. “How was your day?” and the response is: “good.” Or…. how about: “What did you do today?” And the response is, “nothing.” What if we asked the following when your child comes home from school….
Did you need help with anything today?
Who helped you?
Did YOU help anyone at school today?
Tell me about the kids in class. Do you know everyone’s name?
Who do you talk to in class and what about that child do you like?
What do you think that child likes about you?
October is quite the month ahead! We are getting ready for some VERY exciting activities!
Let’s embrace our individuality and be UNIQUE! And celebrate all the differences! October 19th is UNITY DAY and we will come together as a school and wear orange to support UNITY!

First graders painted eight different kinds of lines as well.
Grade two students are beginning an artist study of Hundertwasser .
Grade three students are completing their Mad Hatter teacups.
Music:
K: This week the K students worked on only playing their instruments when they heard a particular word in the song that we were singing. Their self control with instruments was OUTSTANDING!!
1st: This week the 1st graders worked on the boomwhackers, following along and playing some really fun songs.
2nd: The second graders worked on a apple song, focusing on a steady beat and moving a beanbag around the circle to the beat on the song.
3rd: This week the 3rd graders worked hard on learning the first few songs for their Winter concert. The performance will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium!
Library:
This week in the library, kindergarten students are establishing routines and putting books on the shelves the correct way. Our first graders are playing a call number scavenger hunt in the Everyone section while 2nd and 3rd graders are mastering self check out and engaging in scavenger hunts in the chapter book section.
Be on the lookout for the 11th Annual Storybook Pumpkin Contest! We look forward to seeing all the amazing pumpkins every year! Storybook Pumpkins will be on display from October 17th to October 28th. The form can be found here.
Some sneak peeks from last year:
PE
This week in the gym students are continuing to increase cardiovascular endurance by beginning with warm-up laps, hula hooping, and completing a fitness chase.
We also are starting our soccer unit. In our first class we are practicing moving with the ball (dribbling), stopping the ball (trapping), and keeping the ball under control while moving in different paths.
Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten, we learned about the letters Bb and Ff. We continued to practice listening for beginning sounds and read the words I, am. We read the story We Are So Proud this week and learned more about our country’s flag. In Math, we are learning about counting, practicing counting with accurate one-to-one correspondence, and writing numbers 1, 2, and 3. We are learning more about numbers and what groups of 1, 2 or 3 things might look like. Our Kindergarten students are also continuing to learn about school rules and practice safe, respectful and responsible behavior in order to earn Eagle Eggs for their classes.
Grade 1
This week in first grade, students learned about the life and contributions of Johnny Appleseed. Our literacy focus this week has been on plot as well as fictional genres such as fantasy and realism. In math, we are learning the counting on strategy when adding. In science, we are beginning our unit on seasonal patterns as we make observations about the outside world around us. Here’s to another wonderful week in first!
Grade 2
Our second graders have been working extremely hard this week to solidify routines and gear up for second grade curriculum – how amazing! This week in math, students had the opportunity to explore odd and even numbers alongside the strategy “making a ten to add.” During these lessons, we discussed friendly numbers of ten; what two addends create a sum of ten? How is this strategy effective and beneficial to us when solving math facts? Fundations is well underway in grade two; reviewing digraphs and blends; what are they? What do they sound like? What can we look for? During ELA, second graders are studying Kevin Henkes and the variety of stories that he’s written. Alongside reading and discussing these amazing pieces of literature, students have been preliminary exposed to skills such as sequencing and making text-to-self connections. Students continue to practice their observation skills in science while looking at a variety of Fall themed objects (leaves, trees, sunflowers). We are gearing up to introduce communities in social studies; rural, suburban and urban - what is the difference? What wonderful things are ahead! Stay tuned!
Grade 3
In Grade 3 we are exploring the relationship between multiplication and division. Make sure your child is doing their Reflex Math homework; this really helps them master the facts.
In reading this week we read a tall tale called Kumak’s Fish. Ask your child what a tall tale is, and why this selection is a tall tale.
In social studies we are exploring regions of Massachusetts, as well and learning which states make up the New England region. We are learning the capitals of the New England states.
