September is flying by and we are just about settled in here at Assawompset. Hopefully you enjoyed the Open House as the event was well attended and the excitement in the building was intoxicating! Thank you to the Assawompset staff and the PTO for hosting such an engaging night for students and their families! The donations from families were plentiful and greatly appreciated and hopefully everyone got a chance to stop by the annual Book Fair to enjoy shopping for some great reads. The book fair would not be possible without AES PTO, so as always - THANK YOU PTO! What a great way to start the year.
We also held our first PTO meeting and it was the best turnout I have seen. Please remember that these meetings are open to all parents, even if you would like to simply listen in on what is happening around AES.

Holiday Gifts Giving Tree 2022
Each year AES coordinates with a local agency to provide holiday gifts to any families in need. The agency provides three gifts of toys or clothing (no gift cards) to each child within a family. Attached is the agency form for you to complete. Please print the form and send the hardcopy directly to me, Jamie McKenna. If you are unable to print the form, you may email me at jmckenna@freelake.org and I will send home a hardcopy for you to complete. I will also have forms available during our Open House on Thursday, September 22nd. It is very important that you list specific brands of toys and sizes and colors of clothing to assist the agency in purchasing the right items for the children. Forms are due to me by Friday, September 30th.

A look into our classrooms:
Art:
Kindergarten students worked their finger muscles to tear paper, making rainbows.
First graders had to really think out of the box. With the bubble paintings they previously made, they had to “find” things in the shapes.
Grade two students completed their dots for Open House.
Grade three students began “Mad Hatter Teacups”, figuring out how to stack them using a template.
Music:
K: This week in K we worked on controlling our hands when using the instruments and waiting our turn to play. We also worked on identifying instruments while we played a variety.
1st: This week in first grade we worked on singing solos to gain confidence and played a fun game to practice.
2nd: This week in 2nd grade we worked on a fun song where we played a steady beat on various unpitched percussion instruments.
3rd: Mark your calendars…..the 3rd grade Winter concert will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium!! A letter was sent home inviting the 3rd grade families! We look forward to seeing all of you in December!
Library:
All grades have checked out a book for the first time this year! Books are due on their next library day.
Kindergarten students are learning about call numbers- they are learning the books are in ABC order and playing a call number game. Students in first grade are also learning about call number order and are playing scavenger hunt in the Everyone section of books where they identify call numbers on the books. Students in 2nd and 3rd grades are reviewing how to do self checkout and are also reviewing call number order.
Maker Fridays are back again this year! When a class has library twice in one week, the Friday class gets to participate in a STEM Challenge. This month’s STEM challenge is to build the longest paper chain you can using only 2 pieces of paper, 12 inches of tape and 1 pair of scissors. They did a great job!
PE
Students in all grades have begun our mini unit on recess. Students are playing with the new recess balls that just came in and learning a new game called bounce ball. Bounce Ball is a simple game that all students can play during recess and will lead to developing the skills to play 4-square.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten team would like to thank all of the families who were able to join us at Open House this past Thursday! It was so wonderful to see the students show off their hard work with all of you!
This week, we began our phonics program, Fundations, and learned about the letter Tt. We practiced listening for the initial /t/ sound, writing the letter and producing the correct sound. We also began to read two sight words: I, am. We read The Little School Bus and practiced identifying rhyming words in the story. In math, we began to learn about counting and one-to-one correspondences. We are practicing counting each object once and are learning about different counting strategies.
Grade 1
The first grade team would like to thank all of the families who were able to join us at this past Thursday’s Open House! It was great to see students show off their work with such pride.
This week we began our phonics program, Fundations. We are reviewing proper letter formation and letter sounds of all consonants and vowels. Students learned about nouns, characters and realistic fiction as part of our Reading Street review unit. In math, students are navigating the 120 chart and practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.
Grade 2
Our second grade superstars have been working so hard; “perfecting” routines, participating in benchmark assessments (i-Ready math and reading, BAS, the CORE) and genuinely getting to know their amazing classmates; sports fans? Book worms? Classmates who strive to be mathematicians or scientists? We’ve had great conversations in order to foster positive classroom environments! These last two and half weeks have been a whirlwind, but our second graders are setting themselves up for an abundance of success! In math we are exploring fact families alongside odd and even numbers – how do we know if a number is even? Odd? During ELA, students are devoting time to story elements that connect to rich pieces of grade-level literature (character, setting, problem, solution). We are gearing up to start our first grade-level fundations unit next week – how amazing! In science we are beginning to discuss the change in seasons; what can we expect when Summer comes to an end? What colors come to life when Autumn falls? Here’s to the next few weeks as we dive deeper into the second grade curriculum! Stay tuned!
Grade 3
In Grade 3 we are busy with multiplication, and in reading we read a narrative poem titled When Charlie McButton Lost Power. Ask your children what happened! In social studies we are still learning about history close to home, and the features of Massachusetts. If you were able to join us for Open House on Thursday evening, you got to see a lot of the wonderful work and projects the children have been working on. We hope you enjoyed it!
