What another great week we had here at Assawompset Elementary School. We had our very first School Wide Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) ceremony where we reviewed our CORE values: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and SAFETY!
Respect: The focus was on respecting and celebrating “differences” and being unique!
We listened to the following Read Aloud: BE YOU by Peter Reynolds
Link to listen to the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY-xv_lzRVk
BE YOU!
Be Silly, Be Quirky, Be Odd
Be Unique, Be Weird, Be Colorful
Be OK being different!
Be just the way you are!
Peter Reynolds
Responsibility: The focus was on maintaining a clean SCHOOL and being responsible for the HOME we live and learn in each day. The following 2 pictures were presented and a discussion took place around how our actions do affect others. Which table would you want to eat at during lunch?
Safety: The focus was on Playground rules, and Fire Safety coming up in the month of October where the Lakeville Fire Fighters will join us for grade level presentations.

Holiday Gifts Giving Tree 2022
Each year AES coordinates with a local agency to provide holiday gifts to any families in need. The agency provides three gifts of toys or clothing (no gift cards) to each child within a family. Attached is the agency form for you to complete. Please print the form and send the hardcopy directly to me, Jamie McKenna. If you are unable to print the form, you may email me at jmckenna@freelake.org and I will send home a hardcopy for you to complete. I will also have forms available during our Open House on Thursday, September 22nd. It is very important that you list specific brands of toys and sizes and colors of clothing to assist the agency in purchasing the right items for the children. Forms are due to me by Friday, September 30th.
Nurse’s Nook:
Welcome Back to School means “Colds and Sniffs”. Please remember to stay home if your child has a fever. Our Dental Clinic will be held Mid-October- Please reach out if you are interested in the Dental Clinic in October. Thank you to all the families that have returned their Dental Clinic forms.
A friendly reminder 3rd graders need updated physicals in our system. If you have not done so, please send those in.
If students have medications in the nurse's office, there needs to be a current Doctors Order and
Parent Permission slip (Both can be found on the Health Office page)
Accidents happen: I will happily accept clothes donated to the nurses office, and what I don’t use will be forwarded to Gifts To Give for others in need. Thank you to the PTO for the sweatpants and t-shirts!
Join Ms. Pineault for Coffee and a casual hour of discussion.

To provide times and topics that are most relevant to you, please fill out the following short survey! I am excited to work with you and look forward to your responses.

A look into our classrooms:
Art:
We continued tradition, as all classes read The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds. In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. Eventually, Vashti was able to pass the lesson about confidence that she had learned from her teacher onto someone else. A dot might be small, but it’s a powerful way to show your unique individuality and creativity. And that’s the story that inspired International Dot Day. It is celebrated by millions of teachers and students around the world, in 192 countries by more than 19 million people.
Music:
It’s been a great week in the music room!
K: K classes continued to be introduced to some of the instruments that we have in the music room. Everyone did such a fantastic job carefully playing multiple unpitched percussion instruments.
1st: First grade classes all worked on the silly song, Acka Backa! We kept a steady beat on the unpitched percussion instruments and we even had time to play a fun game passing a bean bag around the circle to see who our winner was. I was extremely proud of their sportsmanship!
2nd: All 2nd grade classes learned the song Hey There Neighbor. Everyone mixed together while keeping the beat and chatted with “neighbors” about their favorite activities before moving on to a new partner. Everyone used the instruments to keep an awesome steady beat.
3rd:The third graders will be presenting a Winter concert! Stay tuned for the date!! This week they all worked on a fun partner song, Down the River. I was super proud of how creative they were with their fun movements.
Library:
It has been a great week in the library! Students checked out books for their second visit to the library. Students in kindergarten and first grade are learning checkout routines and the importance of putting books back in their correct spot. Our second and third graders are learning how to check out their own books for self checkout. Library books are due on their next library day!
Physical Education
This week in the gym students are working on a variety of activities in order to review rules in PE and get MOVING!
First students are warming up with laps and getting to choose their favorite locomotor movements. After raising our heart rates we are briefly discussing the need to exercise and working hard. Next students are learning/reviewing how to hula hoop while listening to music. Next we are participating in a virtual reality ¨chase¨ where students are running, jumping, and dodging obstacles. Lastly we are playing Hula Hoop Tag, a game most students are familiar with, our focus is on fair play, giving great effort, and having FUN!
Kindergarten
We are so excited to have a full week in our classrooms together! This week, our Kindergarteners met all of their Specialist teachers and continued to practice classroom routines. We even attended our first assembly and learned about safe, respectful and responsible behavior. All week, we continued to learn about and make new friends in our classrooms and at recess. Our Kindergarteners have done a fantastic job of learning the routines of the classrooms, cafeteria and buses! We cannot wait for another incredible week together!
Grade 1
What a busy week in first grade! This week students shared their All About Me bags. This was a great opportunity for students to practice speaking in front of a group. It was so wonderful for students to share more about themselves. Our first graders also began working on their math diagnostic in iReady. They should be proud of all of their hard work this week. We ended our week with a school wide PBIS assembly on Friday. We look forward to meeting families at Open House this coming Thursday, September 22nd!
Grade 2
Another week in the books, how amazing! Second graders are well on their way to understanding our grade-level routines and procedures! Alongside starting our first i-Ready math diagnostic of the year, students are exploring math facts and fact families with the help of whole group, small group and hands-on activities! During the ELA and writing block, students are working closely with story elements to create crafts to put on display for Open House! Our second grade superstars are beginning to discuss science and the materials that we’ll be using throughout the year such as an observation journal – what does it mean to observe? What senses can we use to observe? In social studies, second graders are learning about Constitution day which is celebrated on September 17th – how can we be good citizens? Why is being a good citizen important? We look forward to diving deeper into the second grade curriculum next week while simultaneously starting reading benchmark assessments! What a busy, but wonderful time of year!
Grade 3
In Grade 3 we are still working on routines both in and out of the classroom. The kids are doing a great job! We are in the middle of the beginning of the year iReady diagnostic testing to see exactly where our students are in math and reading. We will also be assessing reading comprehension using our BAS program.
In math we have been reviewing place value and basic addition and subtraction. We are also starting our first math unit, which is about understanding what multiplication is and how it works. We will be making array cities which you might see at Open House.
In reading we are finishing up our beginning of the year read aloud, a Judy Moody book about the beginning of a new school year. It’s quite funny and the kids enjoy it.
Thank you! Have a great weekend.
