A look into our classrooms:
Art:
Welcome back! For their first visit to Art for the year, all students completed a scavenger hunt to learn where everything is located in our classroom. They also designed a dot to hang over their tables to decorate our happy place!
Music:
Welcome back! This week all of the class spent time getting reacquainted with the music room. We chatted about different instruments and what music class will look like this year and topics that we will be covering. Everyone participated in a scavenger hunt around the music room. Grades 1-3 will be participating in a grade level performance throughout the school year. Stay tuned for the dates! Looking forward to an amazing musical year!
Library
Welcome to the library! This week, kindergarten students are learning about the library and how to take care of our books once checkout begins. Students in first and second grades are getting reacquainted with the library and learning their way around via a scavenger hunt. Our third grade students are completing reading pennants and we are proudly displaying them outside the library.
Students will be checking out books starting next week. If you happen to find any library books in your house- please return them! It is never too late to return a library book!!
Kindergarten
Welcome to Kindergarten! Our Kindergarten team is excited to begin the year together. This week, we started with an Orientation in the classrooms with our families and began with our first day of school officially on Thursday! This week, we practiced learning routines of our classes and the school. We even got to experience our first fire drill together! We are looking forward to a full week of kindergarten starting on Monday!
Grade 1
Welcome back! The first grade team is excited for a new year. This week saw first grade students learning classroom routines and expectations. We will continue to practice these over the next few weeks to ensure that we are being safe, responsible, and respectful members of our AES family. Students are also getting a chance to learn more about their classmates and teachers. We look forward to another fun week in first grade ahead!
Grade 2
What an awesome start to second grade at Assawompset! The second grade team was over the moon excited to meet each and every student; positivity and happiness are in the air! This first week in particular, students were exposed to classroom procedures, daily routines and instructional expectations – there is so much to learn but slow and steady wins the race! Second grade superstars will continue to practice these routines over the course of the next few weeks with the help (and guidance) from their classroom teacher! In addition to this, students are continually learning about their classmates, their amazing teacher and what the new school year has in store for them; with a new year comes great opportunities. We look forward to another fabulous week in second grade!
Grade 3
Welcome back to another great year at AES! The third grade team is so excited to meet all of our fabulous students, and we look forward to meeting families at Open House later this month.
We have two new teachers on the Grade 3 team this year. Here’s a list of team members:
Mrs. Espourteille
Mrs. Holmes
Mrs. Johnson (new!)
Mrs. Ketler
Mrs. Nelson
Ms. Mitchell (new!)
Third grade is spending a lot of time getting to know one another and learning schedules and routines. We are also practicing and reviewing some basic math and reading skills such as place value, addition and subtraction, and reading for understanding.
We hope your child is as excited as we are about third grade!
Counselor’s Corner:
Welcome back to another wonderful school year! I believe it’s safe to say we are all getting used to our new routines and schedules. Establishing consistent routines for children is important because they teach children what is expected of them, make them feel safe and develop appropriate life/social skills including the ability to self-regulate. Both morning and homework routines can be busy times. Creating a visual schedule for the morning routine is a helpful strategy so children can refer to their own schedule as a checklist to complete, thus building independence. Children have varying homework styles, therefore, it is important to understand how your child learns and what works best for them. Studies recommend providing your child with a 30 minute break from an activity (school, dance, karate, etc.) before starting homework to allow time for their bodies and minds to regulate and regroup. Look for more to come in the following weeks regarding different homework strategies. Enjoy your year!
