We will be holding a mock election at AES on November 4th for President of the United States. The main purpose of this is to teach the voting process, from registering to vote to casting your ballots. This is an annual tradition at AES since 1988. Thank you to MARIA MARTIN (retired AES teacher) for engaging the school in this process. Join the fun by discussing with your child what
makes a good leader and how to respect others opinions and
reading some of these character’s books.

Thank you to all the families who sent me “get well wishes” after my little tumble. I’m a lucky teacher!
Kindergarten students learned how to fold a paper into sixteen blocks! We are filling the blocks with letters of the alphabet.
Firsties are making spiders designed with different kinds of lines.
Second and third graders designed folders to hold their projects.
MUSIC
K: The K classes are working on a Halloween song playing the unpitched percussion instruments and we even had time to dance!
1st: The first grade classes worked on playing the xylophones as we talked a little about how sound is produced on the xylophones.
2nd: The second grade classes worked on playing a Halloween song also using xylophone and we talked about vibration and sound that the instruments produce.
3rd: This week the 3rd graders are working on their concert songs and we had a little bit of extra time to add in a few Halloween songs.
LIBRARY
It’s STEM Week in the library!
In grades K and 1, students are listening to the story, Room on the Broom. After, students are creating a magical broom out of legos for the witch to fit all of her friends.
In grades 2 and 3, students are building marble runs using legos. Students are then sharing their creations with others and trying out their marble runs!
If you haven’t turned in your Storybook Pumpkin yet- no worries! You can bring it in on Monday. We are loving all of them so far!

KINDERGARTEN
This week in Kindergarten, we focused on our senses and how we use our senses to learn. We read a non-fiction story titled Senses at the Seashore to help us learn more about this topic. In math, we are comparing numbers 1-5 using vocabulary such as more, less, and equal. Kindergarteners also had a blast during STEM week. They built and tested catapults and enjoyed the daily challenges!
GRADE 1
First graders read about what friends can do together this week. We read Kick, Toss, Hop and Friends. In math, we are composing and decomposing teen numbers. First graders had a great time during STEM week, and a fun time on our field trip to Battleship Cove!
GRADE 2
2nd graders have been working on character traits this week in preparation for the upcoming AES elections in which students are going to vote on which fictional character would be the best leader - Piggie or Pete the Cat. We have been talking about which character traits make a good leader. The top qualities that the children have said a leader should possess are - brave, smart and caring.
Stay tuned to see which fictional character will get the most votes on election day!
GRADE 3
This was STEM week so we had fun learning about force and motion so that we could make catapults. Ask your kids about it!
In math, grade 3 is working on the relationship between multiplication and division. We are learning about arrays and the distributive property of multiplication. In reading we are getting ready to start Unit 2 of Wonders.
Counselor’s Corner:
School Bus Safety Week
In honor of school bus safety week (October 21st - 25th) below are a few highlights of the Massachusetts law:
Drivers must remain at least 100 feet behind a school bus.
Flashing yellow lights means the bus is about to stop. Drivers on both sides of the road should slow down and stop if there is time.
Flashing red lights and a stop sign extended means drivers must come to a complete stop because children are either getting on or off the bus. It does not matter which side of the road you are on as many children may cross the street at this time. Drivers must remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing and the stop signs fold back.
Please note that these safety laws apply to drivers on school grounds. Many cars are pulling out of the visitors’ lot and passing buses while children are arriving at school or being dismissed. Drivers who observe others passing stopped school buses can report the license plates to local police. Any drivers who pass a stopped school bus can receive a fine of $200 in the mail. We understand that families have activities that happen after school, however, our first priority is the safety of our children. Please join us to work together and keep all of our AES children safe!
Nurse Nook:
Anyone cleaning out and getting rid of childrens clothes? The Nurses Office will happily accept your gently used pants, socks, underwear, and sneakers. Accidents happen- My goal is to always help the kiddos back to class quickly.
Thank you and have a great day!
