LIBRARY
We are loving the Storybook Pumpkins that have come in so far! Your student can bring their pumpkin to school between now and October 25th. We are looking forward to seeing more! Clink on the flyer for more information!
This week in the library, Kindergarten is learning about the picture book section and how all books are in order by the authors last name and reviewing the importance of call numbers. Students in grade 1 are learning about our chapter book section and how the books are organized. They are playing a call number game to help them locate books on the shelves.
Students in grades 2 and 3 are fine tuning their searching skills on Destiny, the online catalog. Students are being very successful looking up books in the catalog and finding them on the shelves using the call number. This truly opens up the collection and helps students find the right book for them!
PE
This week in PE students in grade 3 are playing a game called ultimate football. This game helps students improve throwing, catching, and defensive skills.
In grade 2 students are exercising before learning about Anxiety and strategies to help with anxious feelings. Students are then finishing class with a tag game.
In grade 1 and kindergarten students are playing a tag game called pac man tag. In this game we are doing a variety of exercises after being tagged.
KINDERGARTEN
This week in Kindergarten, we focused on baby animals and the different ways they move. We read a fiction story titled Pouch! to help us learn more about this topic. In math, we are working on counting to, showing and writing numbers to 5. Kindergarteners also visited the Lakeville Fire Station for a field trip to learn about fire safety! We learned about 911, how to stop-drop-roll, and the importance of being safe. Thank you Lakeville firefighters!
GRADE 1
This week in first grade, we focused on what makes pets special. We read examples of fantasy and informational texts related to the topic. In math, we are working on adding and subtracting within 10 in a word problem. In science we are learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin. First grade is looking forward to our field trip to Battleship Cove next Friday!
GRADE 2
This week in 2nd grade we continued to discuss our essential question “How do Friends Depend on Each Other” we read the story “Help! A Story of Friendship” and we discussed story elements in fantasy stories. In phonics we are reading and spelling words with short and long a. In math we continued to work on strategies for addition and subtraction.
GRADE 3
In Grade 3 we are preparing for our first Unit Assessment in Wonders. We will be doing half of it WITH the students to show them how to navigate the online aspect of the assessment; then they will do another passage on their own. This is good practice on many levels: they become more familiar with keyboarding and their chromebooks; they learn the format of online questions and how to answer them; and we get detailed feedback on skills we need to reinforce.
We are looking forward to STEM week, an in-school event next week, where we will be designing, building, and testing catapults. If something doesn’t work as we planned, we revise, rebuild, and try again! Science at its best!
Counselor’s Corner:
What is Self-Regulation?
Self-regulation is the ability to regulate (manage) emotions, attention and behavior. Students who have difficulties with this have challenges in school both academically and socially in that they are more likely to have difficulties following teachers’ instructions, coping with schoolwork and getting along with other children. So how can you help your child develop this skill? An important factor in helping your child is recognizing how you as the parent regulates your emotions and behaviors. The key to self-regulation is finding strategies that help calm you. Here are some ideas that may help your child learn breathing techniques to help him calm.
Take Five
- Teach your child to breathe in as she slowly raises each of her fingers on one hand, and then to breathe out as she closes each finger.
Turtle Shell
- When your child is over excited or upset, teach him to go to a quiet space, hug himself or a stuffy and take a slow, deep breath.
Find Your Breath
- Teach your child the correct way to take a deep breath. Breathe in through your nose while counting to 5, then breathe out through your mouth, again while counting to 5.
Stomach Ride
- Have your child lay on her back and place a small stuffy on her belly. Your child can watch the stuffy go up and down with each breath.
The key to mastering self-regulation is to practice the skills when your child is calm. It is not easy for your child to remember to use these techniques when he is starting to become emotional. So practice, practice, practice!
Thank you and have a great day!
