Another great week here at AES!  Thank you for attending our annual Open House. A huge shout out to the AES staff for providing a fun filled event.  Your support is greatly appreciated and we are looking forward to working with you this year!

School Wide Assembly - this week we had a School Wide assembly where we discussed “Making Choices.”  We introduced BRAG TAGS to the students as the staff is SUPER excited to begin using them throughout the school.  The following was presented to students this week:

Here is an example of a BRAG TAG!  They focus on the core values and qualities we want to see here at AES.  The front identifies the trait and the back of the tag defines it!  The students and staff are super excited to begin earning!   THANK YOU TO OUR PTO for purchasing them.

We kicked off today with   celebrating five 2nd graders!  These 5 individuals have been helping to clean the lunch tables for the kindergarten classes.  These students began this on day one of school and they simply

just “do it.”

Please also be sure that your child is dressed appropriately as students will be practicing exiting the bus from the rear exit.  Thank you!

ART

Thank you to the many families who visited the art room at Open House. We went through 500 AES tattoos in one hour! For those who did not get one, please email Ms. T. (annetavares@freelake.org). Also, please send pictures from the photo booth so that I can post them to our Instagram account, #assawompsetartroom. What a great turnout!

MUSIC

K: This week in K we worked on remembering when to play our instruments and when not to with a fun song about apples!

1st: This week in 1st grade we worked on playing our steady beat to a fall song about leaves!

2nd: The second graders learned a fun song about apples, played an energetic game and used unpitched percussion instruments!

3rd: This week in 3rd grade we started learning a few Christmas and Hanukkah song for the winter performance. We also worked on a fun  chant in Spanish to continue with Hispanic Heritage month!

PE

In grades 2 and 3, students kicked off the football unit, focusing on avoiding being "tackled" (tagged with pool noodles) through two engaging games: Sharks and Fishes and Team Team Touchdown. The emphasis was on agility, teamwork, and strategy as they worked on eluding their peers in a fun, safe environment.

Meanwhile, kindergarten and grade 1 got into the spirit of the Summer Olympics! They exercised with an Olympic-themed game and also played Sharks and Fishes, with an exciting new rule added to include more players and strategy.

It was a week of movement, fun, and skill-building for all!

KINDERGARTEN

Thank you to everyone who visited us at Open House this week!

This week in Kindergarten we discussed different families. Our Essential Question for the week was “Who is in your family?” We read the story Mama Mouse and El Gato along with reviewing the alphabet in Animals in the Park: An ABC Book. We learned the sight word “can” and all about the letters Bb and Ff. In Math, we began learning about position words and how to describe where something is using words such as in front of, above, below, behind, and next to. We are looking forward to another great week in Kindergarten!

GRADE 1

We had a wonderful time at the open house and thank all the families who attended! The students were very excited to show all the hard work they have done so far this year. This week in reading we are focusing on nonfiction texts and asking the essential question, “What happens during my day?” The students have been learning what components make a text nonfiction. This week we also celebrated Johnny Appleseed and learned about his life. In math the students have begun adding and subtracting within 10. Great job first graders, keep it up!

GRADE 2

Thank you to all of the families to attended open house on Tuesday night! It was great to see many families. Second grade had another great week. We're reading a story this week called "The Big Red Lollipop." Ask your child about the problem the Rubina faces in the story as we've been working on story elements. In math, we are working on making a ten and adding on from ten. Hard to believe October is next week!

GRADE 3

Thanks to all who were able to attend Open House! It was such a fun evening.

In Grade 3 we are about to begin studying cranberries in preparation for our field trip to a bog next month. The children are excited!

In math we are moving to adding three digit numbers. In reading we continue to learn about community, culture, and traditions.

Rude, Mean or Bullying?  How to Tell the Difference

While we would all like children to get along, the reality is that that does not always happen.  Learning how to identify and deal with peer conflicts is an important social skill that children begin to develop at a young age.  It is important that you help your child differentiate between behaviors that are rude, mean, bullying or a conflict.  Ask your child to explain the situation, for example, your child may say he was hit at recess but what actually happened was that your child was tagged out of the game.  Ask your child if the other student apologized and if your child needed assistance from a teacher.  Another example may be your child may tell you that he was pushed on the bus, but what actually happened is that the other student accidentally banged into him with his backpack.  It is important for children to understand that uncomfortable situations do happen, however, not all situations are a form of bullying.  Please keep the following information in mind when talking with your children about peer conflicts.

  • Rude Behaviors - When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once.

  • Mean Behaviors - When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once.

  • Bullying Behaviors - When there is unequal power between peers and someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it, even when you tell them to stop or show them that you are upset.

  • Peer Conflicts - Peer conflict refers to a mutual disagreement between peers or peer groups of equal power.

  Assistance for AES Families

Just a reminder that AES is currently offering assistance to our families through our Backpack Program and Giving Tree Program.  The Backpack Program provides families non-perishable food items (pasta, snacks, tuna, etc.) each Friday throughout the school year to assist those with the high cost of groceries.  We currently have space for a few more families.  Additionally, the Giving Tree offers holiday assistance (gifts for all children in the family) for families who would benefit from that extra support.  Please email me at jmckenna@freelake.org if you are interested in these programs.  Please note that the Giving Tree is requesting that all gift information be sent to them by the middle of October.  I look forward to working with our AES families!

Thank you and have a great day!
