NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTHimage with text of 2024 National Hispanic Heritage Month

Students in the library also celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month. Students were given a ChoiceBoard on the library’s website to do several activities that ranged from listening to Spanish songs to learning how to draw different cultural items. Students also could learn about Spain, Mexico and places in the Caribbean, Central and South America using Pebble Go! Finally, we listened to the story, Dreamers, read by the author and illustrator Yuyi Morales.   Ms. Teresa from the Lakeville Public Library will be joining me at Open House next week! She will be registering new users and issuing library cards on the spot! We will also have information about the digital resources and all the current events and programming the Lakeville Library has to offer. See you then!

ART

Kindergarten students worked on writing the letters of the alphabet in black crayon. Ms. T. said to imagine that we threw the letters up in the air, and drew them as if they fell.

First graders are finishing their mandalas.

Second graders are completing their artist study of Ukranian artist, Sonia Delaunay.

Third graders were challenged with using aluminum foil to make relief dots.

MUSIC

K-3: This week we kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month learning a little background on what it is and how it is celebrated! All students worked collaboratively with partners to learn a chant in Spanish and used instruments to help express the dynamics and our interpretation of the piece. Super proud of the children for learning a little Spanish this week!

**Attention families of 3rd grade students! Mark your calendars!! The 3rd graders will  be presenting their Winter performance on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium! The first notice was sent home this week! Looking forward to the big day!

LIBRARY:

KINDERGARTEN

This week in Kindergarten, our students have continued to practice classroom rules and routines. We discussed the question “How is everyone special?” and read The Ugly Duckling to help facilitate conversations. We are working on alphabet recognition using the book Animals in the Park: An ABC Book. In math, we have begun learning our routines and expectations for turning and talking to a partner. Kindergarteners have discussed what it means to notice and wonder about things. We have all met JiJi the Penguin and have begun our ST Math journeys! Students also learned about Constitution Day and are working to create classroom constitution promises. We are so excited to see you at Open House next week!

GRADE 1

First graders have continued to work diligently on their classroom rules and routines. This week we read different fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Three Billy Goats Gruff. We started working on the essential question, “What can you imagine?” and discussing the different elements of a fairy tale. Students have also been learning about characters and different story elements. In math we have begun working with the number 10 and finding all the partners of 10. Students also learned about Constitution Day which was celebrated on Tuesday. The first grade team looks forward to seeing you at Open House on Tuesday the 24th!

GRADE 2

Second grade had a fantastic week of diving into curriculum while finishing up the beginning of the year testing. In reading, we started working on the essential question, "How are families around the world the same and different?" Students are exploring characters from different cultures and realizing similarities and differences. In math, students have started reviewing combinations to 10 and making a ten to add on.Retired AES 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Martin came into second grade on Tuesday to celebrate and teach students about Constitution Day. She told them about the three parts of the constitution and reviewed important vocabulary associated with the Preamble. We look forward to seeing everyone at Open House next week!

GRADE 3

Grade three is keeping busy: finishing our diagnostic placement assessments; learning new schedules and routines; getting to know one another. In Wonders, we are working in unit one, which starts off with learning about other cultures, and in spelling and grammar, we’re working on short vowel review. In iReady, we are learning how place value helps us to add and subtract, and practicing rounding numbers. In Social Studies we are learning the meaning of history, and studying the regions of Massachusetts. Our first Science unit will be after we finish this Social Studies topic.

We hope to see everyone next week, Tuesday 9/24, for Open House. Bring the whole family!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

As we settle into another school year, getting back into a consistent routine can be a challenge for some families.  Another challenge for families can be fighting illnesses that come along with another new year.   Attending school on a regular basis is extremely important for your child’s emotional and academic development. Massachusetts requires all schools to monitor attendance which includes totaling absences, tardies and dismissals.  It is important to note that Massachusetts defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% of school.  Because AES is required to document attendance, families will receive notification from AES documenting any concerns related to their child’s current attendance.  This letter also documents potential steps the school may take should attendance remain an ongoing concern.  Therefore, it is extremely important for families to communicate with the school nurse and teacher as to why your child is absent, tardy or dismissed.  While we do not excuse absences, we do document the reasons for absences, tardies and dismissals, and that information is taken into consideration when assessing attendance.  Please know our goal is to work with families to ensure that everyone is healthy and happy, which is why communication is so important.  Again, welcome back and have a great school year!

  Assistance for AES Families

Just a reminder that AES is currently offering assistance to our families through our Backpack Program and Giving Tree Program.  The Backpack Program provides families non-perishable food items (pasta, snacks, tuna, etc.) each Friday throughout the school year to assist those with the high cost of groceries.  We currently have space for a few more families.  Additionally, the Giving Tree offers holiday assistance (gifts for all children in the family) for families who would benefit from that extra support.  Please email me at jmckenna@freelake.org if you are interested in these programs.  Please note that the Giving Tree is requesting that all gift information be sent to them by the middle of October.  I look forward to working with our AES families!

Thank you and have a great day!
