Welcome! Here we go - the start of another school year! The students and staff have been quite busy getting routines and structure in the classrooms and getting to know each other. We had our first SCHOOL WIDE ceremony this week that focused on our CORE VALUES of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, SAFETY and KINDNESS. The following presentation was used for the ceremony and we will continue to meet monthly to reinforce these core values.

Welcome back! All classes heard “The Dot”, by Peter H. Reynolds. International Dot Day is September 15-ish, so we are making our dot-related designs.
Kindergarten students are making pictures using dot markers.
Firsties are making mandalas from concentric circles.
Second graders are making dot designs using the many, many circle templates in the art room.
Third graders are making “relief dots” with foam shapes and aluminum foil.
MUSIC
K-3: Welcome back! This week we are getting used to the music room and testing out the instruments! I am so impressed with how all of the students are using the instruments with care! All students are also working on getting to know the children in their class and sharing their favorite things through song, dance and other movement activities. Grades 1-3 will be performing with me this year. As soon as the dates are confirmed, a letter will be sent home to all families.
PE
This week in PE we are continuing to review our classroom routine and getting active while playing games that we will use to warm up throughout the school year.
In grades 1-3 we are going outside to play a game called extreme rock, paper, scissors showdown. In kindergarten we are staying in the gym and playing tag games while learning how to use the water filling stations.
LIBRARY:
Welcome back to the library! We are going to have a great year. Students have started checking out books on their second visit to the library. Library books are due the next time they visit the library. They are welcome to renew the book if they are still reading it. Please take time to read a book with your child- studies have shown this has a huge impact on their academic achievement. I am very excited to see everyone bringing home a book!
KINDERGARTEN
We had a great first full week of Kindergarten! This week, we learned more about our class and school rules. We had chances to play and interact with friends in our class and learned about Eagle Nests. We are practicing being safe, responsible, respectful and kind to all! It was a great week, and we are so excited to begin Math and Reading lessons next week!
GRADE 1
First grade is having a wonderful start to the year! This week we have been reviewing classroom/ school routines and rules. The students have read many books such as “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” and “The Rainbow Fish” and worked on projects related to these stories. We have also been working on the essential question, “Who Am I?” Students have begun sharing their Me Bag projects with their classmates. Students are learning more about each other each day and are having a great start to first grade. We are excited to continue learning more!
GRADE 2
Second grade had a successful first full week of school. Students have been actively engaged in learning classroom rules and routines. To foster connections among classmates, they have been participating in various games. Additionally, second graders have been earning recess dollars by adhering to behavioral expectations. During our initial school assembly, we emphasized the importance of kindness and reviewed our expectations. In the classroom, students contributed to a kindness initiative by writing ways to demonstrate kindness on Post-It Notes, which are displayed outside the library. We look forward to the opportunities and experiences that the coming week will bring.
GRADE 3
In Grade 3 we are getting to know one another and establishing routines. The kids are all smiles and are enjoying being back with their friends. We are slowly getting into our math and reading curricula and all is well!
NURSE’S NOOK
Welcome Back! I am so happy to see all these smiling faces throughout the day. If your student has any allergies or conditions that may require any attention from the nurse, please be sure to communicate that with School Nurse Nancy Amaral RN.
Does your student need medication at school ? Please fill out the appropriate forms and supply the medication for the school.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Assistance for AES Families
Just a reminder that AES is currently offering assistance to our families through our Backpack Program and Giving Tree Program. The Backpack Program provides families non-perishable food items (pasta, snacks, tuna, etc.) each Friday throughout the school year to assist those with the high cost of groceries. We currently have space for a few more families. Additionally, the Giving Tree offers holiday assistance (gifts for all children in the family) for families who would benefit from that extra support. Please email me at jmckenna@freelake.org if you are interested in these programs. Please note that the Giving Tree is requesting that all gift information be sent to them by the middle of October. I look forward to working with our AES families!
Thank you and have a great day!
