Hello Assawompset Families,
We had a GREAT week here at AES! The grade 2 teachers ran our School Wide Ceremony this week related to Earth Day. The ceremony focused on the Earth being a gift and respecting it. Students engaged in a “Skip a Straw Day” yesterday as the grade 2 teachers focused on resources that are bad for the environment. Thank you to the grade 2 team! Enjoy the beautiful weekend ahead.

Art:
Kindergarten students completed their self-portraits on painted backgrounds.
Grade one students used the paintings from last week to create sushi plates.
Grade two students are making symmetrical rubbings with oil pastel. It has been a challenge!
Grade three students are completing their Square One Art project.
***Ms. T. is looking for parent volunteers to help in the art room to sort and return work from Artapalooza, and to help install the grade 3 tiles.
Music:
K: This week the K classes went back to the unpitched percussion instruments! We also had time for a movement piece.
1st: The first graders are working on reviewing the Instruments of the Orchestra. They all played a fun game of Instrument Four Corners and Instrument Memory Match.
2nd: The Disney performance will be held on Wednesday, May 17th @ 10:00am. If you have not already done so, please send in a RED shirt asap, that will stay in school until the performance.
3rd: Third graders are continuing their study of the brain and music. This week we worked on how music and emotions are related. Everyone listened to musical examples and journaled what emotion the music made them feel.
Library:
Save the date! A scholastic BOGO book fair is coming your way the week of May 22nd! Students will visit the book fair during their scheduled library time. This is a great opportunity to stock up on books for summer reading!
What a fun week in the library this week! Students in grades K and 1 and working with the Dash and Dot robots. Students in kindergarten are learning about their different functions by using the app Go! While first graders are learning about sequencing using the app Path. It’s showtime in 2nd and 3rd grade as we view all the book trailers they have created! Students did a really great job in this multistep project!
PE
This week in PE we are continuing our Hockey unit. Students in all grades are practicing stick handling by playing a partner game. In grades 1-3 students are practicing stricking the hall by passing in pairs. In grade 2 & 3 students are finishing with a game that involves aiming at a target and players defending their area.
Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten we started a new unit in our reading program. The overarching theme of the unit is Where can you go that is near and far? We read the text When Daddy’s Truck Picks me Up and discussed realistic fiction. Students were introduced to the new sight words: here & me. In math, students explored sorting objects into categories and counted and compared the number of objects in each category. Students were asked to explain their thinking by using math vocabulary such as equal to, same as, less than, greater than, etc.
Grade 1
This week we learned how things are built. In particular, we learned how ships, bridges and tiny houses are constructed. We enjoyed our school-wide assembly on Earth Day and look forward to doing our part to reduce, recycle and reuse. FYI- Our field trip has been rescheduled to Monday, May 15th. Please make sure that your child returns the slip as soon as possible. Thank you!
Grade 2
This week in second grade, the students celebrated Earth Day with the entire school during a PBIS assembly. The second grade students and teachers encouraged everyone to “skip a straw” during breakfast and lunch on May 4th. This activity provides an opportunity for students to practice social awareness and practice AES core values (safe, responsible, and respectful) in our school community. Also, the students read a story, Dear Primo. This is a story about how two cousins live and play in America and Mexico. On Friday, May 5th, the students participated in a few Cinco De Mayo activities. In math, the students continue to enjoy exploring geometry concepts.
Grade 3
In Grade 3, we continue to work on area and perimeter in math, with some geometry too. In reading, we read a selection about animal life in the Mojave Desert; ask your child about some of the animals we learned about. In science we are studying fossils.
The Grade 3 Team is starting to plan our end-of-year showcase event; stay tuned for details, coming your way next week!
Nurse’s Nook
As the end of the year approaches, please be sure you are looking over permission slips for field trips and answering if your child has a need that requires medical attention. This is an opportunity for me to be sure I am not missing any medical or physical need our children may have. As always, please call me with any questions and concerns regarding their care during the school day.
