A look into our classrooms:
Art:
Kindergarten students blended oil pastels to make flowers like Vincent van Gogh.
First graders are also learning about van Gogh. They are making sunflower mosaics.
Second graders learned what a still life is. They had to go around the art room to gather things, then draw them in an interesting arrangement.
After learning about shading, the third graders will be drawing characters from Where the Wild Things Are. They will be focusing on shape, texture, form, and value.
Music:
K: This week we are working on playing unpitched percussion instruments to a St. Patrick’s Day song! We saved time to work on a rhythm game and a movement activity.
1st: We are getting ready for the big day…Wednesday, April 5, 2023 @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium! Looking forward to seeing everyone!
2nd: This week the children worked hard on getting ready for the Disney performance which will be held on Wednesday, May 17thy @ 10:00am in the AES gymnasium. We also saved time for a fun rhythm game.
3rd: This week all of the students in 3rd grade were assessed their recorders. Everyone did such a fantastic job playing!
Library:
All students in grades kindergarten through third grade are participating in March Book Madness! As you can see by the bracket, we are in Round 3 and will be picking the books this week that will move on to the Final Four. Students are enjoying listening to the books and being updated on the “scores”. This is a great way to get our students interested in reading!
PE
This week in PE we are continuing our March Madness basketball unit. Students in all grades are practicing dribbling with their right and left hand. We are working on bounce passes and playing a game of keep away to practice these passes while playing defense. Lastly students are taking shoots on an 8 foot hoop to practice good shooting form. In grade 2 and 3 students are playing a shooting game similar to knock out.
Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten we began a unit of study on weather and the seasons. Over the next few weeks we will answer the question: How do weather and seasons affect us? We read, Mama, Is It Summer Yet?, a story about a child waiting and watching for signs of summer. We learned about the seasons and their accompanying weather through song, pictures, writing, discussing personal experiences, and of course by looking out the window! In math we continued our work with teen numbers. Check out these catchy songs from youtube that may help strengthen the understanding for your student!
Numbers in the Teens They Start with 1 Numbers in the Teens Have a Group of 10
Grade 1
First grade is learned all about insects this week. They had a chance to read the popular story Hi! Fly Guy! as part of our study this week. We are comparing and contrasting insect features and abilities as we learn more about these interesting creatures. In math, students are identifying coins and their value, and beginning to add mixed coins. We’re also learning some fun games like penny, nickel grab to help practice these skills!
Grade 2
Second graders are working hard in math this week. This week, they are continuing to practice 2-digit subtraction with regrouping. Students are working on determining when they need to regroup and when they do not need to.
In reading, we started the story of Mr. Putter and Tabby. We’re focusing on the essential question, “What can we see in the sky?” The story is about Mr. Putter and his cat Tabby looking at the night sky.
Many second grade classes participated in a Potato Head Project for St. Patrick’s Day.
Grade 3
Grade 3 continues our measurement and data unit. We’ve done liquid volume and mass, and we are moving to graphing in different ways. In reading we are wrapping up Unit 3 of Wonders and writing opinion pieces with details from various sources. We are transitioning from The American Revolution in social studies to extreme weather in science.
