Good evening FLRSD,

We hope that everyone is well, continuing to see the brightness and beauty in the skies and warmth that surrounds us each day here in the Commonwealth. There is a dichotomy of the “outdoors”, which balances the peace within nature, and in the other ways we find our inner peace often counteracts the daily responsibilities and the world around us that often are not as peaceful.

Despite our best wishes, the only thing we truly can control is our reaction to any situation thrust in front of us. With that, I refer to a narrative quietly read by a senior student - when I was a teacher - as they talked about assumptions based on what someone else says. The impact has stayed with me throughout my career and maybe more importantly in my life, as a parent and a member of this global community. The lesson that we sometimes forget - is that we must take a step back and not react immediately until we have truly seen “the writing on the wall”.  Although many of you have heard this before, I hope its message resonates with those who choose to read it. May we continue to work collaboratively to teach our students that assumptions can and are detrimental.

The Writing on the Wall

Thank you everyone with FLRSD and our two communities who take the time to read the “writing on the wall”, and for helping our students experience the value of seeing the whole story.  In a social media driven, instant gratification and reactionary world, this habit of mind is vital for future success, healthy relationships and the support every child, parent and adult needs be it at home or in the workplace or in the community.  We must collaborate rather than compete in order to ensure that our students PK-12, our Adult transition programs are working together.

We must all remember that so many within FLRSD and the communities of Freetown and Lakeville are here to take care of all of our students while taking care of themselves and their loved ones. As always, I want us all to thank our Principals, Assistant Principals, Nurses, Faculty, Counselors, Staff, BCBA, OT, Speech and PT staff, Paraprofessionals, Directors, Schedulers, Team Chairs, Secretaries, IT and Library Staff, Food Service Maintenance and Custodial Staffs, Coaches, Advisors as well and School Committee, and our town council members, employees and community partners. The collaboration, and incessant belief that we must breathe before reacting, as the story showed us, is vital to a successful, productive and collaborative year and more importantly it is needed to keep our balance and our positivity. I deeply appreciate everyone, as does everyone around you, who is trying to breathe, even when things are not easy.

Have a fantastic week

Alan
