Good evening FLRSD,

It is hard to believe that we are already in the final week of January. It reminds me once again that time is fleeting and we need to ensure moments are cherished and welcomed with positivity. *WEATHER - We are monitoring  the weather and will inform the community as early as we can if there is an impact on the school schedule.

As a district we will continue to focus on areas that need improvement and even more so on the myriad of things that are going well. It is true that as adults, we can remember individual teachers, or paraprofessionals, staff members or coaches who have impacted us. It is not the particular content that we remember but rather who was teaching the lesson and how they empowered us.  The story below, if you choose to read, is one I heard many years ago and was ironically “returned” to me this week by a staff member who is one of the most introspective, kind, empathetic and self-reflective educators I have ever worked with. Its positivity and clear powerful message is something our world needs to be reminded of at times.

A Boomerang World

We've all heard of “karma” and the idea that what goes around, comes around, or what we send out comes back to us. It has also been said that we become what we think! If we speak ill of others or treat them as unimportant, then others will do the same to us; but if we treat others with respect, we will be respected by the majority but certainly not everyone. The premise is simple. In a moment of looking at what can go wrong, I urge all of us to look at the wonders of what is going well despite any challenges you might be facing. We must unite and embrace the light of success rather than the darkness of negativity. And as we teach our children daily - all we can control are our own reactions, while being forthright and learning the habits of mind of kindness, honesty and integrity amongst many others.

This famous very short story that has not been substantiated, will hopefully make you laugh. Should you choose to read it, it reminds me that the power of life comes back at us depending on how we act.

Not So Clever

As I work daily with so many of our Faculty, Staff, Paraprofessionals, Principals, Assistant Principals, Nurses, Administrative Assistants, Secretaries, Schedulers, Counselors, School Psychologists, Directors, Team Chairs, trainers, SRO, IT and library Staff, Maintenance, Food Service and Custodial staff, First Responders,as well as Central Office and the Administrative staff, School Committee, Town Officials, as well as all of our wonderful community partners, I remember that many of these people send kindness, a wonderful work ethic and unremitting positivity each day all of which are truly empowering examples for our students. For those who do, we all say thank you!

Have a wonderful week and send some kindness, appreciation and warmth to those who give themselves to you. It will be returned in wonderful and unusual ways, often far removed after you have given kindness and sometimes from someone who had nothing to do with the kindness you sent out. That is a beautiful thing!

Be well, be safe and above all be... at peace.
