Good evening,

The FES kindness challenge has begun and in walking through the halls the excitement and joy that students are showing when discussing the need to be kind to everyone is heartwarming.

The GRAIS family night on Thursday was a huge success.Thank you to the teachers who gave an insight into the wonderful activities and learning opportunities that GRAIS provides:

The Freetown-Lakeville Middle School musical was REMARKABLE- there are no words to adequately describe the talent on stage and behind stage as well as the incredible work of our Directors Mrs. Blell and Mr. Johnson, the staff who supported our students and the enthusiastic crowd.

Prior to  the incredible performance on Friday evening the FLMS Auditorium was dedicated to longtime FLRSD educator Mr. Paul Couto, who tragically passed away this winter. His wife, daughters, friends, colleagues, family members and town and state officials all spoke so beautifully about Paul. I am saddened that I did not meet Mr Couto as the words that I have incessantly heard in describing him are all filled with joy, laughter, a love of teaching, love of his students, a love of his community and a love of his family and friends.

So rather than a typical Sunday message, I leave you with the plaque that was presented Friday evening that will be found at the entrance to the auditorium. It is my hope that the warmth, joy, kindness, dedication, positivity and collaboration that encompassed everything Paul represented lives within each of us and acted upon daily.

Many years ago the Nike advertisement said “be like Mike”. I suggest we change it to “Be Like Paul”.  What a wonderful world it would be!

The inscription reads:

Paul Couto, a long-time history teacher at Freetown-Lakeville Middle School and Freetown resident, was a vital and active member of his community and a fierce advocate for the schools. A dedicated educator, Paul enjoyed his volunteer work with the Middle School theater group, homework club, and the PTO Book Fair. Paul also coached soccer and hosted a number of international students showing all that Freetown-Lakeville had to offer. His commitment to the Freetown-Lakeville students and families was unparalleled, as was his kindness, generosity and collegiality. Paul was a loving husband to his wife of 29 years, Jessica, and a devoted father and fan of his two daughters, Sarah and Emily, never missing any of their performances and competitive events. Paul’s family was at his side when he lost his hard-fought battle with cancer.

This auditorium is dedicated to Paul G. Couto (May 30, 1968- December 5, 2022)- Loving son, husband, father, friend, educator and ardent supporter of the Freetown-Lakeville Middle School Drama/Music Club.
