History

The NHS ( National Honor Society) was founded in 1921 by the NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals.) The NJHS was established eight years later, in 1929, after the NASSP saw a need for an Honor Society for middle level students. Since then, both societies have grown, the NHS to 14,000 chapters and the NJHS to 5,000 chapters.

Selection Procedures for NJHS

 1. Students must have a cumulative average of 90% or higher in their five academic classes in 7th grade.

2. Upon entering 8th grade, students who are eligible to apply will receive a qualification notice via email and an option to complete an application. The application requires several brief hand-written responses to show the student's understanding of the five tenets and the signatures of two teachers/coaches and a parent.

3. Once accepted, students will be formally inducted and must abide by the national and school standards throughout their 8th grade year.

National and School Standards for NJHS

1. Once accepted, students must maintain a 90% cumulative average in their five academic classes each term.

2. Students must complete community service (4 hours) each term and complete a reflection form.

3. Students must attend all meetings (one per term) and participate in other group events (clothing/food drives, fundraisers, etc.)

If, at the end of a term, a student has below a 90% cumulative average or has not completed community service, they will be placed on probationary status for the following term. That is lifted once service hours are completed or if the cumulative average returns to over 90% by the end of the following term. Otherwise, the student is dismissed from NJHS, which has no bearing on their qualification for NHS at the high school level.

The NJHS sponsors community and school service activities throughout the school year. Mrs. Pink & Mrs. Sheedy are the current NJHS faculty advisors.  You may email for more information at dpink@freelake.org or csheedy@freelake.org.
